Summary
Tony knew better than to play with alien toys. He really did. But there was just something so tempting about other-worldly objects. It turned out that he wasn't the only Tony Stark that felt that way. One explosion later, there's a brand new Tony in town. But there's something not quite right about this Tony and how he reacts to the team, the way he flinches away from Bucky or shakes when Steve picks up the shield or won't turn his back to Clint and Natasha.
It turns out that not every Tony Stark is as lucky as Tony, but damned if Tony, Steve and Bucky aren't going to fix that.

"I’d like to file a formal complaint!” Steve announced a few days later, stomping into the kitchen and leveling one of those patented All American scowls in Tony’s direction. “Why would you give Bucky a kitten? The damn thing is like a hairball of knives! PLUS he named it Steve! Bucky named that piece of fuzz Steve cos he said it acts like me before the serum!"
"You before the serum.” Tony had to work very VERY hard to keep his face calm. “Why– why ever would that be?"
"Because its tiny and scrappy and it’s mouth is too gotdang big for its size!” Steve yelled. “Bucky gave it a bath and then took a picture and sent it to me! He said Kitten Steve looked like a drowned rat just like Human Steve used to!"
“Uh yes, good morning?” Clint also stuck his head into the kitchen. “I’m here to file a formal complaint? Bucky is teaching Kitten Steve to hunt birds and if that mangy cat takes out any more of my hair, I will be billing Stark Industries to pay for a toupee, alright?"
"Oh good I’m so glad Kitten Steve is catching on.” Steve muttered.

Summary
It’s been six years since the “Civil War” that ended the Avengers. The ex-Avengers have been fugitives since then, and Tony Stark has gone to ground, apparently dropping the Iron Man moniker and hiding away for good. The world has moved on without the Avengers, entering into the larger galaxy that’s been opening up to them and forging intergalactic connections.
But now, the Earth has gotten word that Thanos is heading for them with intent to take the Infinity Stones and destroy the planet. Despite many protestations, the situation is grim enough that the world leaders have granted temporary pardons to Steve and his team, desperate to have any sort of heroes standing up to protect the world. But they may need outside help.

Tony and the Queen work furiously to coordinate defense, spread out Enhanced people around the world, and get ready for Thanos. Steve and the Avengers are annoyed they aren't part of these arrangements. Thanos is defeated by plan, and the ground fighters, including the Avengers, are never needed. Recognizing this, the Avengers are tried and convicted for their actions during the Civil War.

Tony leaves Terra after the SNAP, flying the Milano. He travels around most of the known universe and returns trailing a flotilla of alien ships. As the ships fly off, Tony lands and tries to find a place back in his old life. When he knows Thanos is on his way back, he puts out a distress call, thousands of ships from different planets come to fight. Thanos is defeated, despite Steve Rogers, and Peter is retrieved.

Ton gets very sick, and doesn't seem to get better. After consulting every specialist in every field, X-Man doctor Henry believes it might be some kind of reaction to Extremis. Tony wastes away to almost nothing, Steve taking loving care. Although he makes a very small amount of improvement, the story ends with Tony still profoundly ill.
