He did not know anything other than to run. He had been running since the very beginning— he ran from his fears, his nightmares, his responsibilities, his crumbling dreams. He ran from the grief and sorrow that had welled up in his chest for the past several years and did not let go of it.
He ran through the forest as if he had been living here for all his life. He did not trip on the branches sticking out of the ground from the soil. Almost, but he did not. He couldn’t, not now. Not when the adrenaline coursing through his veins prevented him from slowing down and taking a moment to breathe.
Aventurine ran till he couldn’t feel his aching legs anymore. Till he saw a shadowy figure out in the forest.

Before "dying", Aventurine would not have dreamed of laying exposed like this. And yet, here he is, giving everything to Ratio like he didn't just emerge from the depths of an endless sea. Surely, the best way to live is to have a quick fuck. That's what he thought as he approached Ratio, and in turn, he didn't even have to speak a word, just glared, grabbed him by the wrist, and threw him against the mattress.
So Aventurine thinks he's safe, that this will be usual business.
But, this isn't just a quick fuck.
Or: Aventurine is alive. Ratio and Aventurine love in the only way they can.

Summary
Behind the eerie calmness, behind the reckless arrogance, there was vulnerability. Aventurine longed for death, for release from the horrors and deals he's had to make. Beyond that, though, Ratio almost felt like the man was longing for hope.
Even if that flicker of hope exists within Aventurine, it is obvious he intends to destroy it. The gambler will endlessly pursue higher and higher stakes until finally one of them takes his life. He said that he would be the final victor, but Ratio can only assume that he will only consider himself victorious once he finally dies.
Even if those enamoring and enigmatic eyes permanently remain etched on the inside of his eyelids; even if the ache of having their hands guiding each other to discovery and death perpetually itches his skin; he knows when the risks are too high to justify the pursuit. Dr. Veritas Ratio doesn't gamble, he only takes calculated risks, even if right now he really wants to.

Aventurine tries to throw away his life; Ratio tries to not fall in love with a man who yearns for death. Aventurine eventually learns to love himself and to love and be loved; Ratio learns that logic is not truth and that emotions are not a vulnerability.
