Summary
“Why’d you run?” she asks as normally as she can, not wanting to sound too intimidating right now.
Their fidgeting stills — it’s sort of eerie, like their person-battery ran out or something. Not a frozen-in-fear kind of response. Creeps her out a bit. “Just had to,” they mumble eventually. Their fidgeting resumes after they speak, picking at their rough nails.
It answers nothing, yet is also exactly the kind of answer she gave years ago, too. I had to. It’s why all stupid kids run, isn’t it? They had to. They couldn’t see another option, even if one existed. She couldn’t either. A large part of her still can’t.
Susie is a long-haul trucker. Kris is a runaway who gets caught hiding in her truck for a lift. A twinge of empathy in her heart has her allowing them to hitch a ride with her for as long as they need.

Kris looked disheveled. Tattered, damp, covered in mud. It last rained days ago, before the sirens started. They looked like they hadn’t changed clothes, or even slept since then. Strange red eyes peered at her through dirt-caked bangs. Their face expressionless beyond deep exhaustion.
For a long time, they said nothing. When Kris finally spoke, Catti realized it was the first time she’d ever heard their voice. The words came out slowly. A tired monotone that sounded like each syllable was a struggle.
“You’re into weird stuff. Know any magic?”
Catti gets caught between Kris and Noelle in the aftermath of Dess's disappearance.

Summary
Unwillingly, Kris looks up and begin to examine the rest of Susie, noticing features more easily now. The slight rise and fall of her chest underneath the white t-shirt, the way some of the moon’s light reflects off of her scales, how a few of those scales on her cheeks are darker in color, like freckles. There’s an amount of worry in her expression which hits their heart in a way Kris never expected it to.
But standing out from everything else, it’s that her eyes are so… gentle. Susie’s bangs are brushed aside, bright yellow scleras that seem to glow in the dark with pitch black pupils looking right back at them. Her gaze on them feels warm.
Oh. Oh no.
You fucking moron. You can't be falling for her.

“Pick a colour,” they instruct, now face front with Susie.
“Purple,” she answers immediately, with no doubt lingering in her voice.
Kris glances down at the fortune teller – the one that clearly states four options, none of which even mentioning purple. They scoff.
“.. That's not an option.”
What are the options, then?”
They blink at her judgementally. They want to tell her to use her eyes and gain some reading comprehension, but choose to hold themselves back – instead voicing for each of the colours as they appear in their field of view. “Red, yellow, blue and green.”
Susie turns her nose up slightly, creating a little wrinkle in that space underneath her eyes but before her snout extends. “Purple is a mix of red and blue – you can do purple for me.”
Kris & Susie try to predict who she should take to the festival using an origami fortune teller. If Kris just so happens to rig it, then nobody needs to know.

It was safe to say that Susie was a little overwhelmed. She had to put their entire relationship with each other into perspective, and considering everything that had happened between them, it all started to make sense.
She didn’t mind being intimate with Kris; they were best friends after all, but now she thought back to numerous times where she herself would get flustered by Kris’ words and actions, most notably, the time when they nearly kissed in the dark world. She had to play it off since Kris didn’t end up making the move, but oddly enough, she felt like it left her wanting more. It finally started to click for her that she might actually feel the same way for Kris, but perhaps she wasn’t as aware of it until now.
