    He holds out the cigarettes and lighter in one hand and the vodka glass in the other, and Ilya looks at him, surprise evident in his hazel eyes even in the dim light.

    “What?” Shane grins. “Didn’t think I knew about your secret stash?”

    Ilya’s smile back almost reaches his eyes, and he takes Shane’s offerings without a word.

    Flint strikes and with a flick of flame, a different type of smoke starts to fill the air, floating slowly up into the trees.

    Normally, Shane would wait inside until Ilya finished his cigarette, but today, he sits and leans his head on Ilya’s shoulder, willing to make the concession.

    “I hate this day,” Ilya says, his face once again stony, while he lets out a long puff of smoke into the cooling air around them.

    “I know,” Shane says, his fingers tracing along the soft fabric of Ilya’s sweats. “I hate it for you.”

    It’s the same every year on the anniversary of his mother’s death. A long day spent with few words and deep sighs bleeds into nightfall. They sit and look out over the water, ghosts flickering across Ilya’s eyes like the firelight around them.

    Shane watches Ilya shove a hand through his hair, waits for him to meet his eyes. “You pretend to want things, pretend I can have things that we both know you won’t let me have,” he says, his newfound self-esteem carrying him past the point of no return. He wishes he’d never discovered it, because it’s making Ilya’s face do something awful.

    “Oh, you mean I hurt your feelings?”

    Close enough, Shane supposes, his chest aching again. He goes to lift his hand again, sees Ilya zero in on the movement, doesn’t. “I guess so.”

    Ilya scoffs, mean and sharp. “So sorry, Hollander, I didn’t mean to make you get so emotional about a casual fuck.”
    Asshole. So many times he has lobbed the word at Ilya in exasperation, reluctant affection and disbelief, but now he thinks it with vitriolic anger. “I think you should go.”

    Shane finally decides that Ilya's ability to weaponise sex isn't enough for him anymore. Ilya doesn't take it well, but Shane holds firm. Then they start to text about it. Sort of.

When he tried to wriggle it free, his boyfriend resisted and pulled his leg in closer. A taut arm reached out and sleepily tugged Shane back down onto the mattress. He gave in easily.

    “I thought you were asleep.” Shane whispered, tersely.

    He felt a small stab of irritation too. Once again, Ilya had gotten in the way of his workout routine and — even though he wasn’t doing it on purpose — it was hard not to be frustrated about it. Shane needed this. The only way he had been able to soothe his racing thoughts about flunking out of the NHL next season was by reminding himself of his plan to work out early in the morning. Now, his anxiety soared, but it felt like annoyance. Why didn’t Ilya understand that he needed to stay in shape? Didn’t he see how hard Shane had to work to keep up with everyone else?

    “I woke up.” Ilya’s voice was husky with sleep, “Come back to bed, moya lyubov.”

    Shane has always known that he's different. Bad different too, because kids are cruel in their honesty, especially when you're as talented as Shane is. He even makes peace with it (or pretends to). Alone at the top.

    And then Ilya Rozanov happens. A natural disaster that enchants Shane from the first minute of the first tape. Lightning in a bottle let loose on the ice, and he's so beautiful that Shane wants to cry.

    When they meet for the first time, it's like seeing the sun for the first time, and neither can fight their gravity during draft. Their meeting in the gym changes everything - because Shane is not alone in his obsession, and Ilya never knew how to back down. First names are maybe a lot less scary when you're barely 18 and already halfway in love.

He knew Dick would not keep him waiting even if the last thing he probably wanted right now was for someone to visit him. He would probably welcome Roy in, ask him if he ate anything yet, smile and ask Roy about his life while trying his best to evade any truly meaningful conversation — at least, any truly meaningful conversation that was about himself; because God knows that Dick Grayson was always willing to play the patient therapist to any other person at any unholy hour.

    OR

    When Dick returns from a long undercover mission, Roy stops by to assess the size of the psychological damage, and hopefully give Dick some much needed comfort.
