Summary
He remembers playing four square on the playground in elementary school, when they were all getting ready to transfer to junior high, too cool to play pretend but too little to stop playing altogether. Whenever the ball would stutter and skip out of the chalk drawn court, everyone would bicker over whose fault it was, and who would have to get it. Shane wanted to play, not fight with the other kids, so he’d go get the ball. Every time he’d get it, and eventually the others stopped fighting, they knew who would go.

Hollander blinked up at Ilya, then blinked a little harder, but his eyes weren’t quite the hazy confusion either of them craved.
“More,” Ilya said, holding another shot.
Instead of reaching for it, Hollander did something unexpected: his pouty, red mouth fell open and his eyes fluttered half-closed.
“Fuck,” Ilya muttered. He reached up with his other hand, fingers tracing the plush curve of Hollander’s bottom lip and prodding at the fullness of his upper lip. Then his fingers curved inward, nudging against Hollander’s blunt teeth, his jaw not quite open enough to receive Ilya. But he opened up readily, allowing Ilya barely enough time to enjoy the smooth edges of his enamel before Ilya’s fingers fell inward, pressing down against his warm, wet tongue.
Ilya leaned forward and tongued at his own fingers before finding his way into Hollander’s mouth, blood pounding in his ears as his breathing quickened.
“Drink,” he said, messily, into Hollander’s mouth.Shane asks Ilya to fuck him while he’s drunk.

Ilya lets out one humorless laugh, “Stop what?”
Shane ignores him. “At the All Star Game, I told you I liked you. And you said about Russia and your family. And I looked some things up. I get it. I get it better now. I know we can’t but I can’t stop wanting to be…more. Unless we stop.”

Both of them are there the next time Shane wakes up about an hour later, and this time he opens his eyes, rasps Mom?
The room fills quickly, a flurry of nurses coming to check vitals and adjust his IV, the doctor stepping in to conduct all of the mandatory concussion protocol. Shane grunts and groans every time he has to move his sore body but otherwise complies as he always does, sitting through the basic questions and the light shining in his eyes. He’s up just long enough to finish those and to get something in him to eat, and just after Yuna and David both manage to sneak in tearful, relieved hugs, he’s slipping back into sleep once again.
Normal, they keep saying. This is all perfectly normal.
