Summary
It's entirely possible that Dr. Langdon can feel her blush from where he is, even the back of her neck going hot. "It's just"—she falters—"I like watching you when something big happens. You always know what to do, it's—I don't know—"
He only lets Mel flounder for a moment before saying, "Can I tell you a secret?" Mel nods. "I've been doing this for—how old are you?"
"Twenty-three."
Dr. Langdon lets out disbelieving breath of a laugh. "Christ. I've been doing this as long as you've been alive and there are still things that scare the shit out of me."

Summary
“Does Abby know you're here?”
Frank nods, and Mel knows that she’ll need to redo her hair from the way his cheek is smushed against it. “Yeah—texted her earlier, said that I was feeling worse and Abbot wanted to give me some fluids and antibiotics before I went home.”
Home, Mel thinks. With his wife and children and dog, where he keeps more than just one change of clothes, where he has to be the one to text first. She wants to keep him here, under her care, within reach. Hers.
--
Frank becomes Mel's patient; Mel makes a house call.

"You did say the magic words.”
Abbot looks between Shen and his mischievous little smile, and Langdon, still hiding against the desk. “And what magic words might those be?”
“‘Worst headache of my life,’” Shen says, and Langdon grumbles something unintelligible.
“It’s too early for this shit.” Not even bothering to take his backpack off, Abbot puts a hand on Langdon’s shoulder and squeezes. “With me.”
--
Langdon gets a migraine at work.

Summary
With a smile, Mel leans away enough to be able to catch Frank's eye; even flushed with fever and mouth-breathing, he's beautiful, and she's tempted to indulge him this one pleasure. All the same, she runs a hand through his hair, then brushes her knuckles against his jaw. "You should rest."
Frank groans and presses himself, somehow already half-hard in his sweats, against her thigh. "Does it count as resting if I let you be on top?" he asks, and Mel raises an eyebrow.
--
Frank gets sick; Mel does some sexual healing (and causes a little trouble.)

Summary
Later, in the rehab hospital, between physical therapy and occupational therapy and talk therapy, Frank will piece it all together in reverse, a time traveler following ripples to the point of impact.
It starts with Mel, red-eyed and beautiful, haloed in the lights of the SICU: "Dana told me that when they brought you in, the paramedic—he said you were asking for me."

Summary
The next words tumble out before she can stop them: "It looks good on you." Wincing, she quickly shakes her head and grips her shoulder, arm crossed over her body. "I mean—the blue matches your eyes."
Langdon smiles, and because it's him, she knows he isn't laughing at her. "You're right," he says, holding the cuff up to his face, the sky blues matching. He looks down at the emblem on his chest. "The brown matches yours."
Mel hadn't noticed, but now she won't be able to stop.
---
Mel probably shouldn't be this close to Langdon when he's this sick, but for once, closeness comes easily to her.

Summary
When the day arrives, Robby meets him in the lobby and pulls him into the tightest embrace, one hand on the back of his head. Frank squeezes his eyes shut and focuses on breathing past the knot in his throat.
"You made it.” Robby’s cheek is resting on Frank’s head, and the words echo through his skull. “I am so fucking proud of you.”
After everything, Frank isn’t above tears, but he’s really fucking tired of them; when his breathing turns to ragged hitching and he makes a fist into Robby’s shirt, Robby just rubs his back and hushes him and tells him that it’ll be okay. Frank isn’t sure he believes him, but it’s the only life raft in sight.
--
After rehab, Frank falls a little in and a little out of love with everyone.

Summary
Maybe it’s the fever, or the endless months of solitary nights, or the way Mel’s looking at him, or maybe he’s just figuring out what he wants after losing so much—whatever it is, Langdon doesn’t have to think before he says, “Stay.”
Mel blinks at him, head tilted slightly.
“Even if it’s just until I’m asleep,” he amends. “I think it’ll make you feel better, and” —hesitating, Langdon musters one last mouthful of vulnerability— “I feel better with you here.”
A smile spreads across Mel’s face, and after a second’s hesitation, she puts her hand over Langdon’s. “I feel better being here,” she says, “although you’ll need to move over if I’m staying that long.”
--
Robby sends Langdon home sick from his shift; he ends up at Mel's place instead.

Summary
When Jeremy wakes, it’s to Neil sitting on the bed beside him, paging through the Gideons’ Bible from the bedside drawer.
“I sent Kevin and Jean on a walk,” he says. “Kevin couldn’t sit still.”
Jeremy hums in reply. “You can join them if you want. I won’t be much fun here.”
Drumming his fingers against his kneecap, Neil shakes his head. “No,” he says. “I need to talk with you.”
---
Neil chats with Jeremy about sharing Kevin with him.

“I could look at you forever, Adam Parrish.”
Taking Gansey’s hand into his own, Adam kissed his knuckles. “No one’s stopping you, honey.”
With another dramatic sigh, Gansey pulled Adam’s hand close and pressed a few rather open-mouthed kisses to his fingers; Ronan would have been proud. “Forever, though, Adam.” God, he was so earnest, and that wasn’t even the medication—that was just Gansey. “We should get married.”
--
Gansey gets his wisdom teeth out; pain medication makes him even more affectionate toward his partners.

Summary
“How did you do it?” Jean’s voice is a low rumble, barely distinguishable over the pattering of the shower; if Neil hadn’t been so close to his mouth, he might have missed it. It occurs to Neil that Jean has barely spoken to any of them since his rescue from Evermore.
“Do what?”
“Live.”

Of broken ribs, new promises, and ill-advised kisses.

Summary
Everyone went quiet when Ronan undid the Velcro of Gansey’s right shin pad.
In the second before he lifted it off, Ronan wondered if maybe he’d been wrong, if Gansey had shattered his leg again and he’d be back where he was ten years ago: surgery, rehab, surgery again, wheelchair-crutches-cane-limp, maybe he’ll be able to skate again, but certainly not at this level, let alone collegiate. Gansey, lost without his team, his routine, his purpose.
Ronan held his breath as he set the pad aside.
--
An old injury of Gansey's makes an appearance on the ice; Ronan ends up worrying about it more.

Summary
Abby loves the Foxes, but she is not their mother.
She was a mother, once, and the Foxes are adults: their grief wider, their tantrums louder, and their successes far greater than anyone expected.
She’s seen all of them broken or scared at one point or another, but Kevin had come to her that way, years ago, cradling his ruined hand as he curled up beside her on the team bus.
Maybe that’s why, when Kevin nearly passes out after lift one morning, she feels something fiercely protective, if not quite maternal.

Summary
“Why do I get the feeling you’d rather I just pretend you’re fine?”
Kevin opens his mouth to reply but Jean cuts in, “Kevin has always preferred to hide away and lick his wounds like a dog.”
“Weird way to put it, but so did you, if I recall correctly,” Jeremy says—grateful all the same for the reminder—before turning back to Kevin. “I’ll do my best not to fuss too much, but I’m not gonna let you be miserable this whole time, either.”
---
Jeremy, Jean, and Kevin try to make a relationship work; being sick doesn't necessarily make things easier.

Summary
“I’ve had terrible insomnia this week,” Gansey says. “I’m managing maybe an hour or two each night, if I’m lucky.” As if in response to Adam’s unasked question, he adds, “I was going to try to nap after rehearsal.”
Using the cuff of his sweatshirt, Adam dabs some of the sweat off Gansey’s forehead. “And how much coffee have you had?”
A weak laugh. “Trust me, you don’t want the answer to that.”
--
Gansey gets dizzy during rehearsal.
