Riley knew that sometimes she could get really lucky, but she'd also known since she was little that some people never get lucky - people like her father. After every failed attempt, he would just smile and mutter under his breath, careful so she wouldn't hear, that he had the luck of a drowning man. Riley always heard him anyway. But as a well-brought-up girl, she kept quiet at those moments. She didn't need to know what the words meant back then - there was never any real need, because her dad would immediately fill the house with his deep, rolling laugh, and she'd laugh right along with him.
Their house was rarely quiet.
