A car backfires in the middle of a freezing night and Jack drops over the side of the bed, shouting for some unseen ally to get down get down. By the time Frank kneels at Jack’s side, the worst is over, although hearing him apologize as Frank helps him back into bed is almost as bad.
A few months away from home hasn’t made him forget how to soothe away the shadows of nightmares. He draws Jack to his chest, hand working through his curls, the other rubbing his back; half asleep, Frank murmurs, “It’s okay, baby. Daddy’s got you.”
