He’s forgotten how to apologize for hurting someone. For so many years now it’s been his job.
His father looks at him, looks him up and down and sees whatever was not there the last time they stood in front of the other like this – likely sees the exhaustion and the fear and the walls he builds higher each day to ensure they survive to see the next – and he places a hand against his wife’s arm to stop whatever words are set to emerge. “Shane,” he lowers his voice, talks to Shane the way he used to talk to the kids in those early days when he first got them – like he’s talking him out of a nightmare. “What happened when the Pikes died?”

Rozanov lets out a loud, bored sounding noise that interrupts him. “Yes, Hollander, shall suffer pains of loss of life and goods and chattels. I have read it.” The hands that had remained at his side move suddenly, the men of the Voyageur flinching and arming their pistols in response, but only to be presented to them palm up. With another of those terribly mocking grins, he crosses them at the wrists as though already shackled. “I am sorry for betaking that wicked course of life,” he cites the statute verbatim, but with very little respect. “And I have decided to change my ways. I wish now to make my mother and whichever number King you are on very proud.”

Summary
“Oh shit,” Cameron, the rookie left wing from the Steelheads nudges aggressively at his arm to get his attention and direct it across the ice toward the player who’s had it since they both left the bench. “They got Hollander? Fuck, man.”
Ilya makes a noncommittal sound in his throat, which suddenly feels too tight to allow any actual words. “Yeah,” he doesn’t quite agree, “I guess they do.”
Cameron sighs and drapes himself against Ilya’s side. “I hate playing that guy,” he sounds as though he actually does. During the season he’s said the same to Ilya whenever he sees him, but usually with an accompanied high five or some gentle ribbing to show that he doesn’t quite mean it. “You know?”
He doesn’t. “We’ve been best friends since we were thirteen,” he says instead, because it’s starting to feel like something that is in danger of being forgotten.

“You know,” Shane says to the nobody nearby that definitely doesn’t exist, “You don’t need to hit pause every time I do something mildly interesting.”
The forest noise swells around him in a great gust of birdsong and tree branch rustling, as if the woods are huffing a laugh at him under their breath. Shane still doesn’t believe in fairytales or spirits, but he’s starting to think that maybe there is a personality to this place. He stops in his tracks at the thought.
“I’m fucking losing it,” he whispers to himself. “That has to be what this is.”
