His father looks at him, looks him up and down and sees whatever was not there the last time they stood in front of the other like this – likely sees the exhaustion and the fear and the walls he builds higher each day to ensure they survive to see the next – and he places a hand against his wife’s arm to stop whatever words are set to emerge. “Shane,” he lowers his voice, talks to Shane the way he used to talk to the kids in those early days when he first got them – like he’s talking him out of a nightmare. “What happened when the Pikes died?”

I have read it.” The hands that had remained at his side move suddenly, the men of the Voyageur flinching and arming their pistols in response, but only to be presented to them palm up. With another of those terribly mocking grins, he crosses them at the wrists as though already shackled. “I am sorry for betaking that wicked course of life,” he cites the statute verbatim, but with very little respect. “And I have decided to change my ways. I wish now to make my mother and whichever number King you are on very proud.”
