Even though Shane couldn’t hear the exact words, he knew what Ilya said. He shook his head.
“Unlock the door, or I will break the glass. Your choice.”
Shane’s eyes widened again and he briefly hung his head as if regretting all of his past life decisions, and Ilya heard the resounding click of the unlock mechanism.
He felt wild, his mind in violent turmoil as he threw open the door and his palm clutched the back of Shane’s head, his fingers finding purchase in the coarse hair. “Are you listening to me?” Shane ducked his head in acknowledgment. “I’m going to call off my driver. You will not move. I am going to sit there-“ he pointed at the empty passenger seat. “-in this boring car of yours and I am going to find out why the fuck you are alone and who the fuck made you cry.”

Water_NixShane has a panic attack in the bathroom after the awards show presentation which scares ilya into being a little more thoughtful around shane and kick starts their relationship.
I love shanes personality in this. He really feels a little more confident or self-possesed which leads to other people seeing his humorous, bitchy side a little more. Also the fact that he calls the rookies by number until they impress him is hilarious - let shane be a bit of an ass with high expectations! -

Summary
Shane Hollander has the highest hockey IQ in the NHL...and actively pretends he doesn't. He's already set himself apart in many ways, and he doesn't need "absolute hockey nerd" added to the list.
Keeping this secret gets harder as he stops hiding other parts of himself from those around him. He comes out to the Voyageurs (who don't take it very well), he starts hanging out with the Raiders (though no one has a clue about him and Ilya being anything beyond friends), and he feels as if he is losing parts of himself in the expectations others hold for him.
Ilya notices, and resolves to create a space that his boyfriend can thrive in, even if that means getting him the fuck out of Montreal.
Set during The Long Game, where Shane and Ilya have made their plan, Shane's parents know about their relationship, and they've started telling people they are friends, but before Ilya officially transfers to Ottawa. That's right folks, this is a "Boston steals Shane Hollander" fic. We need more, and I am here to contribute☺️🫰

personwhoexcistsTelling Montréal went really bad but Shane's too stubborn to leave or really even be truthful about how bad it is to anyone in his life. The bears are doing theire best to be welcoming though and leclare has no clue whats going on but hypotheticals keep getting thrown around.

The 16 messages from Lily are expected with Ilya traveling to Detroit this week. Ilya has a strong but unsupported hatred of Detroit. The ‘vibes are bad Shane’ was the last claim Shane had heard and he is prepared to read even less substantiated claims.
He’s unprepared to see a group chat he’s been added to.
Shane is only a part of a few group chats. One that Rose put together with a bunch of her not out queer friends that he keeps muted but likes to scroll through every once in a while (they have good memes). The group chat with the whole team he only keeps up with for Captain Reasons but keeps it muted too. The one with both of his parents that his mom uses more often than her single thread with him cause ‘Your Dad deserves to be in the loop too’. And finally the one with Jackie and Hayden which is mostly him and Jackie bullying Hayden and Hayden being increasingly frustrated with their antics.

He gets to stand up for ilya there which leads to him taking a more active stance against all the shit happening in the locker room and his friendships with hayden (not great) and JJ (better).
Special recognition to the two rookies that decide to start taking shane with them on field trips. Shanes new nutritionist who sounds like a hoot and has some great opinions on body shape. And shanes new therapist - love his response to a nonbinary person
