After finishing the ‘main’ storyline from ‘God loves its silence better than a prayer’ to ‘Eternity was made for them’, I randomly wanted to do some ‘canon divergence’ from the main series and focus on Ella and Michael more. In the main storyline, they began a situationship in April 2019 after God left the brothers on Earth permanently (‘The illusion of choice in a late-stage capitalist society’). It eventually evolved to a relationship in 2024 with their largely long distance marriage in September 2027 (‘In the pause before the everyday world returns’). ‘Like a sequel to a dream’ provides an alternate ending to ‘In the pause before the everyday world returns’ wherein Ella and Michael elect to have a child instead of getting married.
In the main alternate timeline, the story totally diverges after ‘Verse-moi, verse-moi l’ivresse!’ which takes place in March 2021. Everything to this point exists in both storylines. That said, the most important stopping point before hopping to this sub-series is 'To free his life from pain', as it sets up why Ella is so upset in 'Skeptical of promises, you don't even bother'.
‘Skeptical of promises, you don’t even bother’ is set in January and February 2023. It explores what would have happened if Ella and Michael moved from situationship to relationship after eight months, becoming a couple in December 2019 but still keeping it secret, instead of the four years in the main storyline. Instead of maintaining chill, she decides to intervene externally as things got worse with Michael’s mental state following ‘To free his life of pain’. Michael gives up on having any real relationship with Lucifer by dropping maintenance of their fragile soul connection, and Lucifer actually has to finally get to know his twin well to fix the issue with the help of Ella.
'Peace comes to them on quiet feet’ starts four months after the end of that story and deals with Michael addressing his fears of becoming his Father as he himself prepares to become a father in November 2023 following an unplanned pregnancy with Ella.
'My peace is hidden in his breast' is a three-chapter one-shot showing how Michael responds upon realizing that Lucifer is manic and depressive using their reinvigorated soul connection. After upsetting both Ella and Michael during his early depressive episode, he learns more details about why they ended up in a relationship. It takes place in February and June 2024.
In 'He broke my sleep with sorrowing', which takes place in October 2024, Michael experiences a very aberrant mental health episode, and Lucifer assists Linda in finding out the cause. In the aftermath, Michael and Amenadiel fill in Lucifer and Ella with deeper details of the structure and history of Heaven and its denizens, and Ella realizes she has to do something she doesn't particularly want to do to protect her family.
'Perhaps if Death is kind' takes place in January 2025. Ella finds herself dwelling on her past relationship with Azrael and need for a connection with Heaven for her family's safety, so she decides to reach out after eight years of silence between the two. When Michael comes home from work early, however, things get awkward because of the Archangel of Death's professional relationship with her brother that began when humans developed souls that needed to be whisked off postmortem.
'So quiet, but I finally woke up' is a follow up to Ella and Azrael reconnecting. Ella invites Azrael on a family vacation so she can get to know her brothers again, but she has to figure out how to get time off of her psychopomp duties, as she's never taken a break before. Once successful thanks to their Mother Asherah's intervention, she ends up as the tenth member on their family vacation, being given the Earth identity of Azrael Demiurgos in the process. It occurs in October 2025 as the Demiurgosi prepare to move from Los Angeles to Portland, something they announce with the family all gathered; addresses the ongoing issue of Michael hearing prayers during Michaelmas, something that came to light the year before during what the family calls 'the Haaiah Incident'; and includes Azrael trying to figure out her real place between Heaven and Earth, as she's spent far more time on the latter since humanity became a thing.
'I'll love whatever you become' occurs in February and March 2027. Lucifer travels from the United Arab Emirates to take Trixie back to school at Bennington College in Vermont after her field work term then spends a week with Michael and Amenadiel in New York City. With Amenadiel living in Los Angeles, Michael living in Portland, and Lucifer living in Abu Dhabi, it's just a bunch of bonding because of missing each other. It is entirely fluff and happy family times.
