not so shore-footed

Summary:

Some time after his furry catch, Jango still struggles with fishing and his newish neighbor: Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Notes:

I didn't set out to write more of this fic, but it has a certain appeal lol. This is a series now, but if you have a punnier series name suggestion, I'll take it! This is for Day 5 of Kenfetti Week 2025, AKA Magic, Monsters, and Myths! Once again, this is edited by the lovely Imagined!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The third time Jango accidentally caught an otter-ified Obi-Wan Kenobi in his fishing net, he was irritated enough that he let the furry Jedi master flail around. He didn’t bother freeing him, only watching from the river bank with his arms crossed over his chest as Kenobi let out indignant, undignified squeaks.

He regretted doing so moments later when Kenobi freed himself by using his razor-sharp claws — Jango still had the scar from the second time he accidentally caught Kenobi as an otter — to slice through Jango’s net. Kenobi swam up to the river bank, the remains of the net clutched between his flippers.

The net was dropped at Kenobi’s feet as a furious, now-human Kenobi said accusatory, “You trapped me!”

“You destroyed my fishing net!” Jango retorted, kicking at the entangled threads in the mud. He looked a soaking Kenobi up and down, maybe a little too indulgently at the pale neck and chest revealed and a little too mournfully where Kenobi still kneeled in the river, obscuring his waist down.

“You trapped me! Intentionally !” Kenobi repeated. He had not seemed to have noticed Jango’s gaze, thankfully, which Jango snapped back to Kenobi’s face upon realization of what he was doing.

“It’s not intentional if you keep swimming into my fishing net!”

“Being trapped by you three times is enough to make it more than coincidental!” Kenobi insisted, his pale cheeks flushing. His eyes were so, so blue. How had Jango never noticed that before? “You know I conduct my survey here!”

Ah, yes, Kenobi’s geographical survey of the planet; a pitiful excuse for constantly getting caught up in Jango’s business. As Kenobi had explained awkwardly the first time, the Jedi Order was thinking of expanding past Coruscant, with many Jedi Knights and masters sent out across the galaxy to survey systems for possible locations to establish new temples. Unfortunately for Jango, his Wild Space, carefully-chosen, formerly Jedi-free moon happened to have a significance in the Force.

Kenobi took his geographical survey very seriously, with the frequency he kept traipsing around in the woods near Jango’s farm or intruding in the river. Gossip that Jango had picked up from tapping into a poorly secured social media site populated mostly by Jedi posited that this survey was actually a ruse to trick an overworked Kenobi into taking a vacation, which he was already failing at.

“You have the entirety of the rest of the planet,” Jango snapped, leaning in to loom very satisfyingly over Kenobi. “Go do your survey somewhere else !”

“This river seems to connect to a series of underwater caves that the Force keeps insisting I investigate,” Kenobi said, frowning. He glanced up at Jango challengingly, a very… alluring look in his eyes. “Your stupid nets keep blocking the way.”

“I own this part of the river,” Jango claimed, “so technically, you’re trespassing.”

“You can’t own part of the river! It’s public land! Besides, I checked the moon’s properties logs, and you only own your farm, which — by the way — is miles back that way !”

(It’s important to note that Boba, who had finished his chores out on the farm and was wondering what was taking his dad so long to check his fishing traps, had wandered into the woods to find Jango. He had come close enough to pick up on Jango and Kenobi’s conversation and sighed very dramatically and said, “Not again,” before turning right around and heading back to the farm.)

“It doesn’t matter whether I own this part of the river or not,” Jango replied, his cheeks burning now that he was caught out on his lie. “None of my neighbors come out here but me. It’s the principle of the thing!” As Kenobi cocked his head questioningly, revealing a snatch of long pale neck, Jango’s mouth ran dry. “Besides, your furry otter ass splashing around in the river keeps scaring off all the fish!”

Kenobi spluttered. “First of all,” he shot back, “I’m a selkie , not an otter! Native to Stewjon, a planet not too far from the system of Mandalore, which you would know if you had paid attention to your lessons!”

“You’re still an otter to me!” Jango insisted.

“Second of all,” continued Kenobi, ignoring Jango’s interruption, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you catch any fish when I’m in this part of the river. You’re terrible at fishing!”

“Yeah, but I’m great at catching furry, annoying Jedi,” Jango snapped.

With an enraged squeak that sounded more otter than human, Kenobi raised his hand and used the Force to yank Jango forward. Stumbling, Jango found himself face-to-face with Kenobi and instinctively leaned forward to kiss him.

Kenobi’s lips were warm, still slightly damp from the river, and entirely pleasant under Jango’s. As he kissed back briefly, Jango found his arms sliding around Kenobi’s neck, his hands pressed against an expanse of wet, smooth skin that he traced his fingers along. Kenobi shivered. The pressure holding Jango invisibly up disappeared, and Jango clutched himself closer to Kenobi.

Then, a moment later, Kenobi seemed to remember himself and pulled back. “What are you doing ?”

Jango slipped back into the river, flailing, and when he resurfaced, spluttering and scrubbing water from his face, Kenobi stared at him, his cheeks blushing brightly and his tongue unconsciously tracing his lips.

Quickly, it became apparent that Kenobi had intended to throw Jango into the river, not kiss him.

“Uh,” Jango offered.

Kenobi blushed more brightly, if possible, until his entire face resembled a meiloorun. Cowardly, he dove into the river and swam away, a furry blur hurtling through the current and leaving a bewildered Jango to pick himself up out of the water.
