All Alphas have superhumanly keen eyesight, but he had to admit that he didn't see this coming.
When Bond's target managed to escape him and flees back to London, the only way for Bond to get close is to go to a party frequented by the posh and wealthy - a 'plus one' type of event where your 'plus one' has to be an Omega, preferably of the fatuous variety. Bond despairs, because there's no way he can find one of those on short notice that he also trusts to watch his back as he walks into the metaphorical lions' den.
But then Tanner raises his hand.

They don't have much time, though - in three days, Q is leaving for his week off, to clear his head before he goes mad.
Q has three days before he can stop giving orders and start receiving them - but there is no one who could help him forget about work and he has to spend twelve hours a day with two men that are making it even harder for him to wear his mask of a boss.

Excerpt:

A field agent and medic from the Diréction Générale de la Sécurité d'État will be waiting at the side entrance. I have cleared them both personally." In contrast to his crisp dry English, Q's pronunciation of the French words was fluid and flawless, the throaty tone of the fricatives sending a surprising jolt of awareness straight to Bond's cock — all the more remarkable given his degree of blood loss.
"You're wasted on Q-branch, you have the voice for a phone-sex call-in line." The words slipped out of Bond's mouth without forethought, although he had plenty of time to think in the sudden pause that came afterward and stretched on for endless moments. Bond hadn't realized until now how Q was always there, with an immediate reply. In all their banter Q had never before been at a loss for words. Ever.

Alec is not a traitor, he is still 006 and both best friend and lover to James Bond 007 (Who for me is Pierce but I won't mention hair colour so feel free to envision him as Daniel).
Q is a hacker in hiding who got himself a job in Severnaya as a computer programmer and hid his skills to remain hidden, he is the sole survivor of Orumov and Onatopp's attack on the base and stealing of Goldeneye.
His path crosses with the double Ohs as he tries to find Goldeneye and what the General plans on doing with it, at first he is reluctant to trust anyone, especially British agents, but between their flirting, protective attitudes, and boyish charms he gradually warms up to them and together they set out to take down Janus.

“At any rate, quartermasters are entitled to double-O agents as bodyguards, when the need arises, and he personally volunteered,” M continued as though he’d not just dropped the equivalent of a bomb and a death sentence through slow torture rolled into one, “and I do agree that under the circumstances, 007 would be the best choice as your bodyguard.”
