No one could say they understood the household dynamics within the witch Qifrey’s Atelier. And Olruggio had to admit he didn’t quite understand it either. But as the girls excitedly prepared for the new addition and Qifrey was becoming more concerned with each passing day, Olruggio couldn’t lie and say he hated it. In fact, he was content here, and happy to bring another life into this small, countryside atelier. If only he could figure out why Qifrey was growing more distant.

The girl fell to her knees. The witch turned their back. The body dangled over their shoulder, like a dead man. A dead man was what he was going to be, in this cruel, cruel world that begrudged making the slightest bit of room for him.
"No," Olruggio's voice broke with fear, "Let him go—"
The arms holding him suddenly went slack and down among the stars, Olruggio fell.
Once the silverwood completely overtakes its host, there is no turning back. However, known for twisting and breaking absolutes, forbidden magic has a solution to offer to this as well. The only drawback is that the spell carved into the tree bark remains etched onto the host's body, which, in this world, is a fate equivalent to death.
Now the master of four grieving apprentices, one of whom has dirtied her hands with forbidden magic, Olruggio tries to adapt to his new life. Some days the dead man is there to help, some days he isn't.

The very first petals come up clean, cherry blossoms with flecks of foam. The wisps of pink glare from Megumi's palm, and he quickly clenches his fist to crush them.
He's been expecting it. The curses that thrive in spring are slow and nasty, too light to notice until you're halfway through death's door, like the spring showers that pour instantly into monsoons.
He's not even sure when the Hanahaki curse took hold. In the past week alone, he can think of a dozen times or more it could have rooted. All he knows is now his throat tastes bitter and there are petals in his palm, soft against the callouses and scars.
No one can know. Never.

The soft, sleep-heavy sound didn’t register. Megumi was preoccupied with ripping at his bedshirt, tearing at the fabric as if that was the sole pressure on his chest.
There was a wobble of the mattress as something - someone - shifted beside him, a firm hand clapped onto his back, and that did startle him, but not enough to break his panic.
“Megumi, I’m here.” Yuuji’s voice was cautious as he called out, the wisps of sleep gone when he realised the state his partner was in.
