It’s for patients, usually.

Pei Ming sighed. He'd been so close, but he'd accidentally triggered Hua Cheng's gege sense.
Xie Lian seemed to remember that she was currently in a female form, and laughed a little.
"Oh, San Lang, you don't need to call me that... I was just helping out Lady Wind Master here. But it's all sorted out now, so there's no need for me to stay in this form. Let's go home, I haven't had dinner and I'm kind of hungry."
Xie Lian was looking at her husband affectionately, but Hua Cheng couldn't have possibly noticed, since he'd clearly forgotten where Her Highness's eyes were. His gaze was glued to his jiejie's chest, not that the ever oblivious Xie Lian had picked up on it.
"Yes. Yes, jiejie, let's go home."
"Well, I guess Crimson Rain Sought Flower is hungry too," Pei Ming commented to Ling Wen as the two departed, with a throw of Hua Cheng's dice.

Summary
Since the tender age of 9, Jiang Cheng has been convinced there is something growing within his chest.
He fancies it might be a rose bush, full of thorns that poke his lungs everytime his father praises Wei Wuxian while his mother compares his lacking skills to his adopted brother and his sister dotes on the older boy, first and foremost. Or maybe it's a cactus, one that parches his throat dry with a hacking cough when all his friends favor the cooler Jiang sibling and dismiss his minuscule insecurities. But sometimes he contemplates if it's poison ivy wrapping tightly around his esophagus, causing uncomfortable irritation when his childhood crush, flawless Lan Xichen doesn't notice him the way Jiang Cheng notices everything about the older boy.
He might not be certain what it is, but all he knows is that he is growing something so magnificent and indescribable.
And it hurts.
Yet no one believes him when he mentions the pain, when somedays the basic skill of breathing doesn't come easy. He catches the eye rolls, hears the scoffs, fumes at the blatant teasing, and clams up at the scolding he receives for his "exaggeration".
Though perhaps his imagination wasn't too far off the mark.

Summary
The flower disease isn't always fatal. The petal-crying variant, for example, is more often painful or embarrassing than deadly. Coughs can be suppressed with medicine. There’s not much to be done about the blood variant of the disease—that one’s nasty, as one would expect when someone has plant matter gunking up their veins—but meditation and regular qi infusions help tamp down symptoms of all kinds. Best-case scenario, the feelings, and the need to share them, fade in time, and then huzzah, problem solved.
…Or, the person processes their emotions and, instead of disgorging flowers, spews their secrets to the person who caused their ailment and thus returns to health pretty much instantly! (Or so people say, but that cure’s not very common. Wei Wuxian can’t imagine why.)
