This world was different. Frighteningly so. This world was soaked in violence, in anger, in fear; sometimes, when he looked at Scott, there was a hatred there that he had never seen anywhere else, and it wouldn’t leave his friend’s usually mild eyes. There was something in the water and apparently no one minded the taste.
No one except him.
It scared him, because he didn’t understand it. The grudges and violence they held so close, he pushed away; it went against some sort of unbreakable code in him. And it had always been a sort of nameless fear, anyway. It had been drilled into them from the start, over and over: once you lose your third life, you’re out. But none of them knew what was behind that threat—what was death in this world, really?
Jimmy had certainly never expected to find out first.

He bobbed his head, accepting the criticism. “Sorry. There was traffic. Uh, I think there was some sort of police action or something.”
“Right.” The word hung as heavy as the rain above them, and for a moment they slipped back into the old empty silence. Cleo stared at Etho, and Etho wisely confined his gaze to the horizon.
This was going to be the longest hour of her life, wasn’t it.

It was all contained in the little movements—Mira had learned most feelings were. It was how Rumi froze on the threshold of rooms sometimes, after she remembered she was only wearing a t-shirt and nothing was stopping them from looking at her patterns. How she recoiled when Zoey linked arms with her now, enough times that Zoey had stopped doing it. How on some mornings when Mira brought her breakfast in bed, just as a treat, she would jerk the covers up over her shoulders in a sleepy panic. Mira would pretend not to notice as she sheepishly lowered them again.
She did notice. (She had too, because if she overlooked something again—)
She couldn’t let HUNTR/X fall apart again.
Today, that meant finding Rumi a pair of shoes to wear. Tomorrow—who knew?

Deep down, Grian knew he should run.
Of course they would hate him—he had dragged them all into this mess, and then he had to go and win his own game to boot. The last thing he should do was test their restraint; just because he hadn’t respawned in the middle of war didn’t mean there were no grudges simmering under the surface—it only made it more likely, in fact, that the unrest was centered around him.
Maybe it’d be quick. Hopefully, once they chopped off his head and watched that crown roll off, they’d be satisfied.

Summary
A friend once asked Tango if he thought he could survive to the end of a horror movie. At the time, Tango laughed so hard he nearly choked on the soda he’d been drinking— a dark cherry-flavored one that burned his throat and nostrils so bad his eyes watered. He laughed because of course he wouldn’t, but also how ridiculous of a question was that?
Or; Three-hundred and thirty-four days into the end of the world and counting. Tango's just glad he doesn't have to do it alone anymore.
