She'd nearly forgotten the letter that was its companion, and the reminder tells her she's been found out, like there is a single thing left of her to expose, and suddenly she couldn't be further from sleep.
The poem presses a column of prose between heavy paragraphs, wedging the story apart, a pillar out of place, structure impertinent and imposing, and embarrassment tinges her ears pink. Yuri leans close, shades her in the shallow, pooling afternoon light, and the shadows creep along the floor beneath them. The book closes with a heavy thunk, hisses when Yuri returns it to the coffee table and slides it out of reach without taking her eyes off of Monika.
Yuri's lilt is sap, rich and sticky with how it fills her gut like the most satiating sweet when she speaks again after a long moment.
