“Who are you?” Wymack says gruffly, but in a tone that Neil doesn’t think is accusatory.
“This is Neil,” Allison says, appearing from somewhere else, managing, somehow, not to look ruffled in the least despite running around all morning. “He’s been running the lights, and he’s brilliant.”
“I didn’t give you the job.”
“No,” Neil responds, after a slight hesitation.
“We needed an extra set of hands, and Neil was outside.”
“He’s a stray?” Wymack asks, and Allison nods. “Of course he is. You the one who’s been making Minyard actually play his part occasionally?”
Neil shrugs, then nods. He doesn’t really think anyone can make Andrew Minyard do anything, but the statement is more true than not.
“Huh,” Wymack says. “Alright. You let me know if you need anything, and see if you can convince him to act rather than just speak.”
“Pretty tall order,” Neil mutters.
Wymack snorts out a laugh. “Don’t I know it.”

Neil gets drugged at Eden's. Again. They get him back quickly, but the parallels fuck with everyone and reveal what happened with Nicky the first time around.
But Andrew remains flawed, so doesn’t know anything is happening until he hears Nicky gasp. Nicky makes a lot of unnecessary noises, so this one isn’t especially concerning—not until Nicky’s hand flashes out to grip Andrew’s arm and he says, “Andrew,” with such strained urgency that Andrew’s head erupts into a riot of alarms.
He follows Nicky’s pointed finger and sees, through the thick forest of bodies, Neil. With some guy. Kissing. He’s out of his stool almost before he can consciously register the scene, leaving the scarred black metal toppling to the ground behind him and shoving into the crowd. Something is very wrong. Neil had been too still. Too loose. An unstringed puppet. Andrew knows what Neil looks like when he wants to kiss someone, and that—that isn’t it.

Neil says, “Andrew? He’s a nightmare.”
He knows it’s a joke. His team knows it’s a joke. Andrew will know it’s a joke.
The press does not seem to know that it’s a joke.

He flips Neil’s phone open and scrolls through the call history. It’s not a long list; his own name is at the bottom, then there’s a call from Nicky one from Dan. There’s an outgoing call from Neil’s phone to Andrew’s – that day they went to Atlanta – and one to a number that isn’t saved but that Andrew recognises as Bee’s.
And then there’s a call from an unknown number, no more than an hour ago.
He wants to call it. He wants to call it and demand where Neil is, wants to find out whoever the number belongs to and bash their head into a wall, break every bone in their body until Neil is back with them.

“Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.
