For a moment, Shane simply stared at him. Then he blinked.
"Oh."
The response wasn't defensive. He didn’t sound annoyed - if anything, Shane looked caught off guard, almost embarrassed even. It made Ilya feel slightly bad that he had brought this up.
"It happens a lot," Ilya said carefully.
"I mean, I guess, yeah,” the tips of Shane's ears turned pink, and his voice got unexpectedly quiet.
Ilya hesitated before forcing himself to continue, realising there was no going back now.

It has been a long time since the funeral of Ilya’s father. It has been an equal amount of years since Ilya has last seen his older brother. He has put his life in Russia behind, as much as he possibly can, and has found a new life in Ottawa with a great team that loves him and his husband.
Ilya thinks he might be the happiest that he has ever been. That is until the ghost of his Russian past shows up at the Ottawa Stadium’s door.

There’s knocking at his front door. He frowns. Jackie and Hayden are the only ones that he is expecting tonight and they are both sitting in his living room. He has no idea who could be knocking on his door at this time of the evening, unless–
“That better not be another uninvited guest!” Shane calls out to his friend in the other room.
“We didn’t invite anyone!” Hayden calls back–indignantly–as if he hadn’t been trying to set Shane up with multiple women over the past few months by inviting them to dinner parties at the Pike's house.
“Can you see who it is? My hands are soaked.”
“Sure thing.”
Shane washes the last plate and lets the water drain. He washes his hands and, with the towel in hand, walks in the direction of the hallway when Hayden’s voice rings out.
“Uh, Shane? What the fuck is Rozanov doing in front of your door?”
OR: After dinner with the Pikes, Shane finds a lost and broken Ilya Rozanov standing on his doorstep.

"Shane had been sick for weeks and struggling mentally for even longer. And Hayden hadn’t clocked how serious it had become. It’s an easy urge to rationalize it: he has four kids; Shane hadn’t fucking said anything; his play had never suffered. But the excuses resonate like the shifting of blame, selfishly escaping guilt.
Hayden thumps his head against the grimy window. Just as he’s nearly overwhelmed by the intrusive urge to put his fist through it, Ilya Rozanov blisters into the room, frantic and crazed. He’d been half-expecting him, but even still, all thoughts, dangerous and otherwise, are effectively silenced."

They didn’t do this – order breakfasts for each other or stay the night. Well, Ilya had tossed a protein bar at Shane once when his stomach wouldn’t stop growling. And Shane had scrounged up a banana and Gatorade when Ilya’s leg had seized up in a cramp, but that was only because they wanted to continue to have sex.
Shane ventured towards the bed and gently bent down to softly kiss Ilya on the mouth and then the forehead before heading to the bathroom. A feathery warmth glided through his chest, and that felt as wonderful as it did dangerous.

The first time they hooked up, Rozanov had kissed him before Shane got on his knees. They kissed when Scott Hunter was in the room next-door. And they kissed slowly and sweetly, on his apartment stairway, after Rozanov had taken his world apart and put him back together again. Hell, even in that bathroom, where he felt as if the Russian was trampling on his bared soul, Rozanov had kissed him.
So why was it different this time? What did he do wrong?
Shane aches with how much he wants—needs the other man. There is a hollow numbness in his chest every time he thinks about those golden curls and ocean eyes, and he hates himself for wishing he could have more.

Wanting Hollander is dangerous, because Ilya is wanting more than he’s allowed to have. But Ilya keeps wanting more and more, because he is vain, selfish, undisciplined. He wants to have Hollander in his arms, sweet, warm, and gorgeous.
And he will always regret it later, in the quiet moments that come in the aftermath, in the small and lingering ache that follows him once they are apart.
