Wilbur’s face must’ve reflected the way his heart skipped a beat at that, because Tommy’s grin widened now that he’d found a thread to pull.
“So?” Wilbur asked, struggling to act like he didn’t care about that part of the conversation.
“So, I want to know what’s wrong with you.”
The thread tugged right in the center of his chest, and Wilbur wondered if this was what it was like to unravel.
or, Wilbur is only a few months away from getting his degree when he has a mental breakdown and is unwillingly pulled out of his classes. With nothing to fill his days, Phil gets Wilbur a part time job at a local bookstore, where he finds himself getting trained by a loud-mouthed teenager who hates his guts right off the bat. Great. All he wants to do is graduate, but now he has to deal with a seventeen year old trying to get him fired. Thanks Phil.
But somehow, this kid ends up being exactly what Wilbur needs.

Wilbur’s eyes widen when he sees that people are pairing off, the musicians preparing to resume their playing. A bright smile spreads over his face and he grabs Tommy’s hand, noticing how his fingers are sticky with icing from the festival roll he’d already eaten.
“Yes, we’re absolutely gonna dance,” Wilbur tells him, tugging Tommy to the square.
Tommy giggles, his smaller hands squeezing Wilbur’s, and Wilbur’s smile grows wider as his bare feet hit the warm cobblestones again.

Tommy does not like to think of the past, but he can’t move on from it either. He is not a ghost, but he is and he is a shadow as well. There are carrots where there didn’t used to be, but some things never seem to change. Potatoes, for one. Wilbur, for another. Tommy, himself, for a third.

such a good fic i love it so much all the themes of humanity and tommy and wilbur and everything about it is literally so good i can't even ughhhh the emotions this made me feel are uncharted and i wish i would experience if over and over and over again for the first time (tbh enough time has passed this was basically like a first time read)
also beautiful writing style it's so descriptive and i love it
future me please come back and re-reread this so i can cry at the ending again and experience joy

wow. this was just so well written? like the writing is so fast paced and literally breathtaking. i started reading this fic ages ago AND WHY DID I NOT FINISH IT IT'S LITERALLY SO GOOD WHAT.
anyways the chess aspect is so well integrated into the fic, as someone who is horrible at chess i absolutely loved this to pieces. also just the fact that it's tubbo centric is amazing because it's literally such a cool insight into what tubbo's thinking and how he views the world and all the people around him, the character dynamics between everyone was just so well written and there are so many little details i may have to do a reread soon because holy shit it's simply too good.
