    Summary

Aldo Bellini and Goffredo Tedesco try to fix themselves and each other with mixed results.
Vincent Benítez didn't sign up for any of this but ends up doing a better job anyway.
Thomas Lawrence has been managing these idiots all his adult life (and people think running a conclave is a thankless job).

    Summary

“You’d like him, you know,” Thomas said.

“I do like him,” Aldo said automatically, twirling the stem of his wine glass, looking into its deep red like it was a scrying mirror.

“I mean as a friend. If you spent more time with him. You have a lot in common.”

“Do we use the same shampoo?” asked Aldo, raising an eyebrow. Thomas gave him a warning look but his mouth was tugging up.

“You’re both stubborn,” he said bluntly.

Cardinals like Thomas Lawrence and Aldo Bellini know all too well how slowly things move within the walls of the Vatican. But with Vincent Benítez's election cracking their world open, and the new Pope cutting away the old branches to make room for the new, both find that change is flooding in everywhere, mostly within themselves.

    Summary

Aldo has never really been one to think much about penance.

“We honor God in a multitude of ways,” he’d told Thomas once. “I agree that discomfort is useful. We learn to turn away from our sins and commit to do better. I don't understand what mutilating yourself in His name is meant to accomplish. We were not put in this world to suffer, Thomas."

Thomas had been quiet for a long time. "It is a different thing, though," he'd said finally. "You will agree on that much at least. Self-harm is a sin. Self-flagellation has a place in doctrine."

Aldo had winced. "Next thing you'll tell me is you've joined Opus Dei. You don’t think confession is enough? Prayer?”

“I think mortification of the flesh has its place,” he’d said absently, eyes faraway.

“Does it serve a purpose, though, apart from hurting you? Does senseless pain really bring you any closer to Him?”

Thomas had barely flinched. Aldo had felt possessed by the urge to grab his jaw and direct him forward, look at me, look!

“We must repent, Aldo,” he’d said simply. "By whatever means necessary."

He’s always thought Thomas did enough repentance as it was for the two of them. He thinks he understands better now.

    Summary

That’s what had stung the most about Thomas’s accusation all those weeks ago. It wasn’t that it was true: This, he had always known. It was that Thomas had finally seen right through him, that Aldo had so thoroughly shattered the false image his friend had of him.

or: i put Aldo Bellini through the meat grinder of guilt and shame and then slap the flimsiest bandaid on the wound at the end because i am a good catholic...?
