Summary
Welcome to Desert Bluffs Preparatory Academy, which is not located in the desert or near bluffs of any sort, and was named for the founder's favorite vacation spot.
But whatever.
Fact of the matter is, it's prep, it's posh, the students are occasionally absolute psychos (and also sometimes very sweet), and a lot of strange things go on all over the place, from torture in detention to glam trash town boys to malevolent corporations ready to take everything over (wait, what?)
But there are in fact worse lives for them to lead.
Series abandoned as of June 2015 officially, but anything written after January ain't worth the paper it isn't printed on. The final story posted is the author's preferred version of this. Sorry, guys. I need mental health more than I need this.

Grace knows he was supposed to be in his house on Erid, Simon knows this new guy cannot possibly be a hallucination, and Ava, upon hearing Grace ramble about theories for how he got there, knows that new guy is Smart. Could-Secure-Our-Survival Smart.

Summary
They’re 8 months out from Erid when it happens. The Hail Mary doesn't exactly have any pre-programmed alerts for announcing the approach of what Rocky would later find out is a wormhole, but to her credit, the ship does try her best.
"Approaching anomaly detected."
Suddenly Rocky finds himself in a strange new space. It's much smaller than the Hail Mary, with strange metal walls and no life support. But to his surprise and delight, there's another human here! Only, they don't seem to be in space anymore. And the new human keeps treating Rocky like he's not real, which, rude. And the human seems so sad and scared, it reminds Rocky so much of when Grace admitted that their mission was a one-way trip. In fact, this new human reminds Rocky of Grace in a lot of ways.
Wait, did the human say something about radiation?!
That settles it. Rocky's getting this human out of here and back to Grace. There's no way he's letting anyone else die of radiation. Not on his watch.
He's going to save this human and they're both going to go home. Together.
