He makes sure Edwin takes breaks regularly, he draws the runes, he keeps the pocket-dimension organized, he deals with the social aspects of the agency, he's the brawn to Edwin's brains. Recently he's also become Edwin's boyfriend, which is the best one by far.
Crystal had pitched an absolute fit about "healthy communication" and that sounds like social shit to him, so he takes that up as his responsibility too. Edwin doesn't like discussing things like that, so Charles gets better at reading him and figures it out for the both of them.
That's all peachy right up until Charles doesn't have it as well in hand as he thought.

Edwin blinks, his hair in disarray, his clothing all rucked up from being carried. His blue eyes are blown wide open, looking around frantically.
Charles untangles himself, doing a little ungraceful flip-roll across the floor to get his legs and head the correct way around to actually face Edwin, scooting forward on his knees to grab ahold of Edwin’s shoulders. “Are you okay, mate?”
Edwin’s eyes lock onto Charles. There’s something weird in his gaze, looking right at Charles but not right at Charles. There’s ink on his shirt, half hidden by his blazer, smeared in with frantic motions of a fingerprint. He’s got a little sizzling mark right at the divot of his collar, already disappearing slowly, Charles can’t help but run his thumb over it, trying to wash away the pain like a smear of dirt on a cheek.
Edwin flinches.
Charles rips his hands away, still hovering only inches away. “Edwin, please, mate, you’re scaring me.”
Edwin looks confused, right into Charles' eyes, and asks—

Fantastic modern au with a bit of a twist. Established payneland and cryland, new catwin with an extra side of “our boyfriend” sprinkling of Thomas/Charles. Monty and Crystal arcs are also excellent!
Great characterization of complicated characters and good portrayal of poly relationships.

Through the stinging Edwin can feel the kiss. For several long moments he can feel pressure and warmth, and a lick of wetness when the Cat King curls his tongue as he draws away that cools as his breath blows against the delicate skin of Edwin’s lips. He stares at the Cat King as the sensations fade into tingling before vanishing entirely.
“What?” asks Edwin, rather stupidly, but in his defence he hasn’t quite managed to regather all of his cognitive faculties.
The Cat King takes a step back and raises the hand he’d touched Edwin’s mouth with, waggling the gloved fingers demonstratively. “Iron filings,” he announces smugly, “embedded in the leather."
