Simon had strong hands. The left, his own, was callused from frequent use, with a wide palm and thick fingers. The right, made of xenonite—an extension of the prosthetic the Eridians had gifted him after he'd settled on Erid—matched in form. Both were currently wrapped around the handle of a shovel as he dug a hole in the dirt, prepping it to plant a tree sapling grown from a peach pit Grace discovered hiding in a dehydrated fruit snack on the Hail Mary. Grace's heart thudded in his ears as he watched his fingers grip the metal shaft as he dug, feeling every bit the pervert for his ogling.
Ryland Grace hasn't felt the touch of another human being in a long time. And Simon sure does have some nice, strong hands.

He's just trying his best to make sure his kids are alright and happy, and like he says in the book, "they can tell when a teacher actually cares about them."

He couldn’t take it anymore, Grace needed to sit. He plops right down onto the sterile flooring, knees up as he rests his arms across them, head buried. Biking that hard for that long, then running across the building at full speed really wasn’t a smart idea in his current condition. He might throw up. He’s been so nauseous lately.
Grace could feel Stratt’s eyes on him, looking, calculating. Evenly, she speaks again.
“…Your physiological state is affecting performance?”
Grace closed his eyes briefly.
“I said I’m fine.”
“You are not answering honestly."
“I’m just pregnant,” he said, emotion finally leaking through to his voice. Grace refuses to cry here.
A pause. Then Stratt speaks again.
“Does this impair cognitive function?”
“No,” he said, voice wobbling.
“Then it is irrelevant.”
