Shane hums an affirmative. “Not all of it. Just the basic stuff. The Big Dipper, Orion, that sort of thing. I always looked for the North Star any time I was outside at night.”
“I used to do that too,” Ilya murmurs. “We call it something different, but I know the one. Funny to think we have always looked for the same star.” Shane looks up at him with suspiciously shining eyes. God, that face. No wonder he has always been defenseless against him.
“That’s a nice thought,” Shane says softly. He takes one of Ilya’s hands and lays it palm up, tracing the lines with his fingers. Love line, life line, fate line, he hears his grandmother’s voice again. He has crossed every line Ilya has ever had.

“But I will look so boring.”
“You don’t think my glasses are boring, and I know that for a fact.”
“Of course I don’t.” he groans again. “They’re perfect, I’ve never gotten harder in my life than when I see you in glasses.” he mumbles and Shane just shakes his head with a long exhale. He’s going to have to bring out the big guns.

Ilya widens his eyes, moves his hands in an impatient “get on with it” motion. He has the urge to say it for him, end both their misery. Shane blinks rapidly a few times, takes another deep breath. “I want to stop,” he says simply.
Ilya lets out one humorless laugh, “Stop what?”
Shane ignores him. “At the All Star Game, I told you I liked you. And you said about Russia and your family. And I looked some things up. I get it. I get it better now. I know we can’t but I can’t stop wanting to be…more. Unless we stop.”

Shane cuts himself off with a faint stutter in his breath that Ilya feels in his own chest.
“Please,” Ilya begs, but he isn’t sure what he is even asking for.
He wants Shane to leave. He wants Shane to stay. He wants Shane to hold him and never let go.
Ilya feels Shane’s fingers fist in his curls, holding tight as if Ilya could ever bring himself to pull away.
Shane doesn’t know that Ilya could never, that he cannot fathom turning his back to take even one step away from him.
All he can do is push Shane away, make him walk first, and pick up the pieces left behind.

“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. “Fuck.” Shane melted into the strong hand at his neck, the pressure over his throat and the heat of the Alpha’s palm. “Fuck, that’s–” his eyes started to flutter closed, his knees going weak, but he heard the Alpha huff a laugh and immediately stiffened again.
“Don’t do that.” he warned. “Don’t laugh like me letting you put your hand on my throat is predictable submissive Omega behavior and you're making fun of me."
“That is not why i was laughing.” Ilya squeezed Shane’s throat lightly, his thumb pressing over the suppressant patch covering the Omega's bonding spot and blocking his sweet scent. “I thought you would fight it, fight submitting. But you didn’t.”
“No I–” Shane swallowed hard. “I like it.”
“Good.” Ilya smiled slow and a little dangerous, running his tongue over his bottom lip and then over the sharp ends of his fangs before he leaned in and growled into the Omega’s ear. “Now get on your knees.”

It lasted for hours, no matter how hard Ilya fucked him or how many times he used the knotting toy. Shane was delirious, could not seem to comprehend that Ilya was a Beta, no matter how many times he reminded him, apologized to him, begged him with his eyes to please stop. When Shane finally passed out, Ilya sat up staring at the wall for hours.
He’d finally figured it out, the one thing he could never give Shane, no matter how much he tried. There was no substitute, no toy that could compare. Ilya was lacking, and Shane knew it now, would come to his senses and realize Ilya couldn’t give him what he really needed. For the first time since his childhood, Ilya thought about dying. Not killing himself, never that, but maybe somehow going to sleep and not waking up.

How can he when it has been trapped in his own heart so long. Neither of them know what the next year will bring. There is so much time before Ilya can have his agent, or his future agent, he will need a new one with no connections to Russia, reach out to Ottawa and hope that they’ll be interested in a future Hall of Fame center. The one thing Ilya is certain of is that he will do everything in his power to make their plan work. He spent his entire adult life lusting after, and then pining for Shane with his whole heart.
“I will call.” Ilya reaches for the hand Shane has left on the gearshift and threads his fingers through his. He wants to say so much, but he has always been better with touch than words, especially when the only shared language was English. “We will talk every day.”

He kept his voice low as they got into position for the game to start so the ref wouldn’t hear. His eyes trained on the ground, ready for the drop. He couldn’t force himself to look at Ilya in that moment.
“What.” Rozanov’s voice was low as he growled the word out.
Shane braved a glance upwards, hoping he wouldn’t see more disgust. While he did find it in Ilya’s eyes, it seemed to also be mixed with a twinge of sadness and pure, unadulterated anger. Ilya let out a harsh puff of breath.
Unsure of how Ilya felt about his confession, Shane went on, “Yeah it’s whatever man. Sorry, I shouldn’t have-“
“No. You don’t apologize. Motherfuckers.”
