This was it. The moment. James could deflect, make a joke, keep things light and safe. That's what the old James would have done—the James who hexed people in corridors and showed off on his broomstick and never let anyone see past the confident exterior.
But sitting here in the firelight, with Severus Snape of all people looking at him like he might actually be interesting, James found he didn't want to be that person anymore.

James catches Lily cheating on him with Sirius. Turns out it’s been going on for years. Turns out Remus knew too. James feeling betrayed finds himself wandering aimlessly. He happens across Snape, the only other person who knows how it feels to have your heart broken by Lily.
Snape isn’t sympathetic. Actually he’s quite hostile and even glad for James’ pain. Karma and all that. And he says as much but is taken off guard when James agrees. And then James, feeling terribly lonely, apologizes to Snape and offers to buy him a drink.

Sniffling Camilo tried to explain “ i uh i fell down, i hurt my knee” he said shuffling his feet staring down at the ground. He knew how Abuela could be sometimes, how she could get mad when you didn't do things the way they were supposed to be done.
“and that is why you're crying?” she said, kneeling down to be at the boy's level resting a hand on his shoulder.
“Yes, it hurts” he replied to her.
His Abuela sighed at this, “Camilo, you're a man aren't you? Men don't cry over little things like a skinned knee, so shush your tears you're okay?”
Abuela treats Camilo just like she did Bruno, only now Pepa had the courage to stop it
