"I wont let him know. He'll know hes loved by at least us, I swear," she whispered and Daniel leaned over shakily, kissing the small red mark on Evan's forehead.
"I'll always protect you, Eve. I promise," Daniel whispered, Maddie dropping her head down.

When Daniel died, their grandmother's inheritance went to the next eligible male in the family, which was a cousin. But when Buck finds out about Daniel when he's 28, he's also contacted by his grandmother to let him know that cousin passed before he turned 30 so Buck is next in line to inherit.

"Lucas, seriously, calm down. It's just a broken condom. I can get tested for... you know, the standard stuff. It's not the end of the world. Just take a deep breath."
Lucas let out a sound that was half sob, half hysterical laugh. He backed up until his spine hit the bedroom wall, sliding down slightly as if his legs could no longer support his weight. He looked at Buck like he was looking at a dead man.
"Evan," Lucas said, his voice dropping to a devastated, trembling whisper. "I should have told you. I swear to god, I should have told you before we even left the bar, but I didn't think... I've never had a condom break on me. Never. I am so careful. I am so, so careful."
"Told me what?" Buck asked. His voice didn't sound like his own.
Lucas closed his eyes, a tear escaping and tracking down his pale cheek. He swallowed hard, and then he looked Buck dead in the eye.
"I'm HIV positive."

While they did plan to have Evan, in the moment, they didn't think of how it would mess up the rest of their life plans. So, when Maddie left for college, they decided sending Evan to the Army and Navy Academy in California would be for the best. Little did they know that this was one of the best things they could do for their youngest child, because not long into his second semester, he ran into Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.
Now
Buck did not think he would ever go back to the Navy. Not after that last disastrous mission. Not after he found a new team and family in LA. Not after he started to put down roots. But Buck never thought someone would plant a bomb on a fire truck. He never thought he would be at ground zero of a tsunami. He never thought he would have to fight for his job or that others would become bitter and hateful about him trying to get back to work.
So when he gets a call from his Pops that he's needed down at Top Gun. Well, it's not like he's doing much with the 118 now, and it's not like he could say no to the COMPACFLT anyway...

Buck is no stranger to being alone. He spent years fending for himself after leaving the house he grew up in, and even the years before that, he didn’t really have anyone.
He thought he had found a family with the 118. He had a captain he came to see as a father, found a mother in Athena and a wider family from his coworkers and theirs. Buck even thought he might have a chance at something more with the man who was his best friend and his son. He should have known better.-+-
A post-lawsuit fic (kind of) where Buck leaves and never really had any intention of coming back. The universe has different plans for him though.
