Claudia swallows. “I’m not a prostitute. Louis—he adopted me, when my parents left and the rooming-house burned down.”
Grace startles. At the admission of death or the admission of adoption, she can't be sure. If Grace knows Louis' true nature, of his relationship with Lestat, then she must have predicted that her brother would never have a child.
Then—Grace winces. “My brother’s daughter,” she says, voice quiet, voice contemplative, voice regretful, and she manages to make the title sound like more than Louis or Lestat ever has.
Her mother died. Her father ran off. Her adoptive parents let her burn.
Claudia is cursed to a half-existence forever because Louis missed the woman in front of her so much that he wanted to replace her.
But when Grace says my brother's daughter, some part of Claudia thinks "I am both of their daughter, I've got Lestat's hunger and Louis' ache, and Grace just sees the parts of me that are human."
(Grace meets Claudia next to a grave before her mother's funeral, and things go a little bit differently.)

He likes the way Pete’s mind bounces from thought to thought, the quick grin that lights up his face when he’s enjoying a joke. Ray likes that Pete is always trying to keep everyone’s energy levels up, even if it means winding them up until they pick up the pace just to get away from him. But most of all Ray likes the way Pete looks at him, as though he is somehow witty and fascinating, and not painfully average in every way. What had Parker called him? A bumpkin? The fuck did I ever do to you, Collie?

This whole spring into the summer has been a cramped airport – New Orleans to Atlanta to London to Amsterdam to Berlin to Prague to Lisbon to Barcelona to Rome to Warsaw to Paris, Claudia in a windbreaker or shorts or a skirt he told her to change out of before boarding a plane to no avail, Claudia in sunglasses, Claudia with a book or Claudia with her nose in her phone, Claudia with a crochet hook and a ball of dollar-fifty crunchy acrylic yarn filing the cabin with the smell of plastic and imitation sheep, and then Louis. Louis there, too. Something with bigger teeth looming over the both of them, but free. The same way that a rehabilitated raptor is free. Scar tissue still where he’d bled through the feathers and the gauze and the cotton but eager to fly into the blue sky right out of the carrier. Bars lifted. Door opened. Soaring into the clouds, the hinge of a jaw, the dull throb of the unused joints of the mechanical wing. Ring-legged, but free.
