The high-and-mighty brat walks around headquarters with an aura so cold you’d think he’d still be freezing under all those layers. Even through his grueling training, he still finds time to embarrass me, popping up in almost every situation I’m in. His presence is infuriating. At least that’s what I thought—before everything. Before our training, our arguments, our missions. They say the heart grows fonder with distance, but for us, the more we got to know each other, the more complicated it became. Maybe rivalry isn’t us hating each other. Maybe it’s just us not understanding each other. Whatever. Maybe the stomach just grows louder without food.

Too simple—the way they take him with a few bats of his eyes, the way they believe his technical truths. (He’s never liked lying.) He won’t be there for long, he tells himself. It won’t mean anything, if he stays during movie nights instead of immediately retreating to his room. It won’t mean anything if he’s giggling while sitting on counter tops while Zanka and Riyo cook. It won’t matter if he ruffles Rudo’s hair or let Enjin put a hand on his shoulder. It shouldn’t matter. It won’t matter.
He’s still got a relatively easy job to do. And a reward to gain. How hard can it be?
