“You’re troubled,” she told him, as if that changed much. Though she sustained on emotion itself, she never understood it that well. Words meant to comfort instead came across as prodding. Byleth didn’t have the combination of words necessary to ease him.
“You don’t say,” he echoed back, reaching up his other arm to cradle her cheek. She let him. Byleth hummed again, sinking in the feeling of it all, the feast right before her preparing itself without much effort on her part. She rolled her hips atop his, catching how his lips parted, how his grip tightened on her cheek.

Summary
Gods, what was he doing? What was he thinking?
His dream had told him everything he wanted to hear before crushing his heart under its cold grasp. Shuri was in his arms, giggling, relaxed and holding him close. Shuri had called out his name with so much affection tingeing her voice.
Shuri had told him she loved him.
Perhaps it was the futility of it all that made him fall for her. Knowing that nothing could amount to his affection, nothing he could do would make her see him in a different light, would make her open her arms to him. Or perhaps, more simply, it was because of his kinship with her.
When he saw her for the first time, when she was fourteen and scared, so so scared, he didn’t see a step-mother, as his father confidently declared she was. He saw a girl with far too much responsibility, a girl who feared his world the same way he did.
He saw a girl who struggled, who failed, who was forced to grow up too soon.

“I don’t mean that I didn’t care for anyone else,” he rushed to explain himself, using more words in one go than she’d heard since before the Calamity appeared.
“But what mattered most, is you.”
How was she supposed to answer him without caving in? He was so painfully genuine it made her knees weak. And knowing how oblivious he was, he surely hadn’t thought of the implications of such a statement. Still, she covered her cheeks instinctively, willing her blush to be less noticeable. Her knight swallowed, the knot of his throat bobbing. Her eyes flickered across him and perhaps he was right that she shouldn’t have told him to sit on her bed. He was docile, still tense, the veins in his hands flexing. His tunic was loose on him, deceptively covering corded muscle and his trousers- his trousers were taut around a protruding tent. Oh.

“I should get you home,” he said. His voice dropped in tone, into something rougher, but not quite in anger.
She shook her head. “Still have things to do,” she murmured. Every word became a fight against herself. Heat pooled where he touched but she couldn’t bring herself to make him let go.
“Can’t it wait for morning?” Sylvain gave a weaker smile, beginning another joke. “If you’re looking for a good time, you won’t find it here.”
“You’re right, I should’ve gone to another bar.”
The patrons boomed behind them, laughing, some dancing. A couple passed out on the chairs around them, but all that melted into background rabble under the intensity of his gaze. His palm pressed into her. He inched closer. She could almost smell the cologne he used, of cedarwood and cloves. His eyes darted down. They fluttered against her exposed skin and she wanted nothing more than to give him there go ahead, here and now. Assuming he’d even want to.

The plains of his face had morphed into liquid moonlight, so aggressively pale it made his hair seem pitch black. But Rae found it difficult to focus on his furious gaze, honing on the crimson stitches lacing his neck. This wasn’t just her Emperor, her favourite character, this was a man she’d ruined trying to save him.
And perhaps, because it was the man she’d verbally fought for in her years past, in recent present with Cobra, perhaps because it was the same boy she’d wanted to protect and miserably destroyed, all that welled within her was affection. The urge to hug him so strong it overwhelmed her rationality, her regard for the precious life she’d torn the plot apart to protect.
“You lied to me,” he told her, his voice like flint igniting.
OR. Rae ruined the man she loved and had discarded him like a used tissue. She’d done everything to warrant his revenge, but when Rae saw Key, the first thing she did was hug him.

Everything is nice and pleasant, but she can’t shake the feeling that there’s something not quite right about Fhirdiad.
