Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

He blamed the league for the monster in his chest, the one that wanted to sink it's claws into Hollander’s neck, to see the red crescent marks that would be left when Ilya would finally retract his hand—only when Shane was spluttering and out of breath. He blamed the fact that they had been shoved into each other’s faces as young as seventeen for the intense burning flare that would explode in his chest every time he saw a glimpse of those dark doe eyes and freckles—a burning that wasn’t anything remotely close to hatred no matter how hard he had tried to convince himself otherwise. He blamed every single fucking person that hyped up their rivalry for the fact that all he wanted was to see Shane’s teary eyes as he plowed into him, making those little punched out *uh uh uh* sounds Ilya heard in his fucking dreams.

J.J.’s eyes settled across the parking lot, where Shane had hung up the phone but was still crouched, his silhouette dark, head down, hands at the back of his neck. Fatigued, trying to make himself smaller, hide how exposed he clearly felt. Because he and Roz were a thing. Not a one way thing but an actual… thing. Shit.
J.J. hated Florida. The humidity fucked up his skin, and they had those giant snakes that weren’t even supposed to be there but some idiot Florida men had set them free and the swamps there were so fucked that they thrived. J.J. set his jaw, determined, before he responded. “Tell Jackie to get three tickets.” He reached into his bag and confirmed his passport was there. “It will be harder for Coach to punish all of his captains. I’m going with you.”
He nodded his head definitively.
