"This isn't going to go how you want it to, Ki." He didn't sound as annoyed as she'd expected. He almost sounded sad, or maybe guilty? Fuck, that wasn't… that wasn't right. He wasn't supposed to be sad, or at least not like this, not in a way that didn't include shouting and anger and violence. Rand's sadness always included violence, it was just a question of whether he directed that at himself or others. Him seeming so calm just felt wrong.

Moving forward is a thing we all must do eventually, and shockingly that even includes surviving bug zombie armageddon. Rand, Rolan and Kian have found themselves at the end of one massive journey, and right at the doorstep of another one: With nothing but the clothes on their bodies, a bit of money, and a dog remaining of what they had, everything feels near hopeless. Not all is bad though, they've got each other at least! They have to get over little grudges both new and old, but we believe in them don't we?...don't we???...Well- even if we don't, one thing will always be true.
They're going to have to just roll with it.

Rolan Deep is confident in a courtroom. He can debate and argue semantics for hours, he can quiet a room and make people listen with a handful of words, he can figure out exactly what needs to be looked into and researched in order to swing a case in his favour. He knows what he’s doing.
Tithonus, however? Out on the field? He has no fucking idea. When he’s in costume, his legs extended with one too many joints, his vision enhanced by his extra eyes, his long hooked mantis arm itching to tear into something, everything that makes him Rolan in his mind just disappears. The heroes in front of them don’t know what he is. They think he’s just another changer class parahuman who leans too far into the buggy schtick. When he’s out like this, pincers snapping under his scarf, he feels this instinct, this need, to just—exist differently. Let Rolan go and be... part of a hive. Part of a whole.
Every single other part of that whole is dead now. Whatever. Good riddance.

Summary
Sitting in front of Rand, hair still damp from dunking his head in the god-damned bayou, is Rolan Deep. He’s halfway to death, blood staining his suit jacket, arm in a cast, in a sling, inside his torn-up shirt sleeves. He looks just as scared as Rand feels, fingers twitching with nerves. It’s a familiar sight; he had the same habit in high school. Rand remembers kicking his shin under the table during DnD when the fidgeting pissed him off one too many times. He thinks he regrets it. Rand remembers shotgunning weed together on his twin-sized bed as an apology afterwards. He doesn’t regret that.
Rolan’s asked Rand to kill him, once this is over. Sure, he might be one of those bug-monster-things, but Rand looks in his eyes and sees the same boy he's missed all this time.
They’ve missed so much time, and Rand knows Rolan feels it, too.
Set early episode 4, after Rolan discovers he's... not quite human. This fic is a spiritual successor to Tim, I Wish You Were Born a Girl, but you don't need to have read that one for this to make sense.
