Will was spiraling.
Which wasn’t exactly new in his life, though this time the reason was: he was questioning his sexuality.
For a long time, he thought it was just a matter of time before he liked girls. That he needed to grow up, mature, or whatever it was he still lacked—something that explained why he didn’t feel any interest in them. There was always a comfortable excuse to cling to.
But when he felt that twist of jealousy watching Mike and El walk away together, leaving behind everything they had once been, maybe he realized that he did like someone… just not who he was supposed to.
At first, he tried to convince himself it was about El. He liked her. She was pretty, she had nice hair and… that was it.
He didn’t know her well enough to keep that idea alive for long, so he was left with no choice but to settle for the truth: he liked Mike Wheeler.
Why? He had no idea.
Still, there was one possibility left.
Liking someone—and having that someone be a boy—didn’t completely rule out the idea that he might also like girls. Maybe the problem was that the only girl truly close to him was Max, someone he clearly saw as just a friend.
So he started analyzing why he liked Mike. He figured it had something to do with how close they’d been before, the time they’d shared, how easy everything had been between them. So maybe, if he managed to build that same kind of closeness with a girl, he could end up liking one.
And that’s how the plan was born.
How to figure out if I like girls:

Talk to a girl.

Get close to a girl.

Go on a date with a girl.

Kiss a girl.

Realize that I like girls.
A solid plan.
With absolutely no flaws.
At least, if you asked him.
And that’s how step one began.
