Chapter Text
Doc had been the one to bring it up in conversation. Humans were rarer than hybrids or other on the Hermitcraft server. Grian had thought about it briefly and agreed but then it became a discussion of if Any human was on the server. Sure he hadn’t thought about it but surely one of them had no extra features or abilities. So Doc challenged Grian, find a completely human hermit and bring them to him.
Grian never was one to back down from a challenge so he made a list, everyone on the server and what he thought they were, some basework to start with before the journey
Bdubs- mooboom, some sort of Moss hybrid
Cub- Mad scientist
Doc- creeper, goat
Etho- phantom?
False- human
Scar- elf! I know this one!
Gem- elf?
Hypno- human
Jevin- blue slime (why is he blue???)
Impulse- robo man, golem man, big strong dude
Iskall- human with cyborg parts
Joe- human
Keralis - Human person
Mumbo- vampire like
Pearl -moth? Goddess, she was human when I met her but stuffs changed
Ren - wolf,,werewolf?
Stress -human
Tango- ,,demon?
Beef - human
Wels - a knight (Grian do you know what a knight is?)
XB - fish boy?
Xisuma - voidwalker
Cleo - zombie (does it count is she Was human?)
He showed his rough draft to Doc to prove how many humans there probably were. Hoping to get a nod or confirmation, all Grian got was laughter.
First, the easy ones, people he knew and was close to, those he talked to frequently.
“Mumbo!” Grian called out to the vault area, “Muuuummmmbooooooo!”
There was some bumps and a clattering sound of things falling before a stutter replied, “uh, just a moment Grian! I’m doing,” a pause, “richest hermit things! Yes! Counting my diamonds again!” Another crashing and clattering sound followed with a perfectly placed comedic cat yelp. There went Jellie I guess.
A couple seconds later a a mustached head peaked up over the edge of a tunnel Mumbo had been working in to see Grian holding back giggles. Mumbo sighed but smiled at his friend pulling himself up and brushing off his vest.
“What can I do for you”
Grian grinned and showed off his notebook of names, “I’ve been challenged to find a Human hermit and thought I’d start off with some of the ones I know for certain!”
Mumbo scanned the page and failed to hide his smile, “oh boy, you have got a long way to go! Well I’m happy to say, I’m not the Human here, vampires not a bad guess.”
Grian pulled back the page and looked at it again to be sure he’d shown the right one. “Wait so is vampire wrong, I could have sworn I’ve seen you drink blood?” Maybe shapeshifter then if turning into a potato and eating souls was anything to go off of.
“Sure! We can go with vampire, although I eat redstone more than blood. I only drink blood when I need to be more presentable as a human. Comes with the whatever Mumbo is territory.”
Grian hums tapping his pencil by his mouth in thought before writing down
-Mumbo is what he eats, vampire for redstone kind of-
Mumbo speaks up again “You’ll find many of the hermits have the ‘whatever they are’ as a species, we don’t talk about it frequently because for many of us, we don’t know anything different so why question if Etho knows a bit too much or if Doc fights a god for stress relief.”
That makes sense, it did help his transition from being a Watcher of Hermitcraft to a Player of Hermitcraft, nobody minded his oddness because to them it wasn’t that odd, actually backtrack
“Wait, Doc fought a god!?”
“Grian!”
“What!”
Mumbo shakes his head, “Doc fights gods! He hangs out with devs! This isn’t new! They’ve been on the server before! How have you not noticed this!”
“Oh my gods,” Grian shook his head, “I don’t even know what to think of this! I thought he was exaggerating when he told me how he lost his arm! Do you think he’d let me join his next sparing session with a god?”
Maybe that explained some of the times it felt like his teeth were all being pulled on and eyes were on him, or when his hair stands on end when the wind blows weird. He had chalked it up to weird Watcher magic or an experiment gone wrong. Most things are like that in hermitcraft, assume someone did something game breaking at all opportunities
Mumbo patted him on the shoulder, “it’s okay, we all know you’re a spoon sometimes”
To which Grian groaned and began to walk away in search of him next stop.
Pearl. On his fly over to her place he took his time. He knew Pearl wasn’t human, at least not anymore. She had been, when they first claimed each other as siblings, but so was he and he wasn’t human anymore and clearly she wasn’t either. The way her eyes reflected light into thoughts and ideas, the freckles that weren’t colored normally and shone a bit too bright. Grian had had plenty of nights with her beside him, her little star freckles shining her favorite memories on the ceiling. Yes Pearl was built of stars moonlight and memories. Grian was confident she wasn’t human, not even to mention the fact she’s also a goddess now! Or something like that, Grian had been occupied by rift magic when she revealed her godhood. He wondered when she assended.
Grain landed gracefully, don’t let the coms lie to you and tell you he died because he was distracted thinking and ran into a tree, he didn’t experience any extra kinetic energy thank you very much. Besides the rude fall he took Pearl was ready there with his stuff seeing as he -didn’t- die at her base.
“Oh, what’s this!? A birdy? Visiting my place!? Crashing at my door step! To what do I owe the pleasure?” Pearl leaned on a shulker, swinging his sword with learned rhythms.
Grian folded his arms and totally didn’t pout. “Well I Waaaas, coming by to check in and ask you a question. But it looks like you don’t Need my good company if you want to taunt”
Pearl laughs and throws him his sword. She picks up the shulker box and hands his stuff back. The peace offer is accepted and he easily puts them away
“So what’s this I hear about a question?” His sister asked, Mumbo probably messaged her, that or she snuck a glance at his notebook
Once more Grian pulled out his list of all the hermits and their theorized species. He ran down the list and points out her name. “Just checking to see if my assumptions are right”
She hummed and nodded reading through the names. Pausing at the end, “Well I don’t think I can say much I haven’t already to you, star born goddess, player turned moon and stars being turned goddess. However I woouulld go look into this one,” Pearl pointed to Cleo’s name, “she’s a zombie sure but I think you would find her story cool”
Logical next step. And Cleo would probably know where some of the others like Joe would be hanging out! Win win!
A distant boom
Rain started to patter down
Loose.
“Oh!” Pearl yelped, untying her jacket from her waist and throwing it over the avian “Grian your wings are gonna get all wet! Let’s get you inside.”
He sighs tucking away his notes for the day but gladly ducks under his sisters arm despite the height difference and hurries his way inside her base. She shakes off the droplets and wrings put the jacket.
“Goodness that came out of nowhere, learn to watch the sky’s more I guess”
Pearl set the jacket down walking over to a closet and pulling out a small hand towel. She offered it to the human embodiment of a pouting wet cat that she calls her brother who had sat down on the sofa. His wings were so puffed he may as well be a chick.
Grian gladly, even though the pout says otherwise, took the small towel and began to pat away the moisture on his wings. The fabric was soft, neither one of them having any use or tolerance to the scratchy rags some used. Some small pleasantries were exchanged but the impromptu preening session takes focus so for the most part Pearl let him be. She sets the kettle on stove turning it on, on a low heat and pulled a shulker of self care supplies out from a chest. Luckily her brother spends enough time there that she did have a few wing specific tools.
So Grians little mission takes a pause for the night, at least until the rain stops. He may be stubborn but he wasn’t on a time crunch. Also Pearls soup is to die for and he would never turn down an opportunity for good soup.
