Edgar stared at the limp form of Poe, his first constant companion, and felt nothing. Sure, he'd felt grief at first, then anger towards this beast that had caused Poe's death, and then finally, numbness.
The numbness was worse than the grief. At least grief meant he was still in there somewhere.
Poe's feathers were matted now, that glossy black dulled to something flat and wrong. Three years of that stupid bird stealing food off his plate and screaming at inconvenient hours and flying directly into the faces of people Edgar was trying to make a good impression on. Three years of Poe, no and Poe, stop and Poe, I swear to every god that's ever existed...
And then, finally, recently, haltingly: Poe. Hey. Good boy.

Summary
The streets of Gotham/Glasgow were dangerous after dark. The Lafayette family controlled the streets at night, prowling through alleyways and skulking in shadows. They had Robin, and Batman couldn't help but blame himself. It had been his idea to break into the Lafayette mansion instead of letting the police department handle the whole thing. No, he just had to be Batman and do it all himself.
Robin was only 12, still a child, yet Batman had allowed him to convince Batman to tag along, through danger and near-death experiences.
And now the Lafayettes had Robin. They had stabbed Batman, leaving him to bleed out, while they had taken his ward, his son, to do who knows what with him.

Scar held the bag of gold aloft, waving it over his head as his team cheered. It hadn’t been too difficult to take down the target, just a rogue golem that had slipped out of its control spell and rampaged through a small village, but the reward had been a few dozen gold pieces, plus a boost to the mercenaries’ reputations.
He barely noticed as an almost imperceptible weight vanished from his right side. He quickly whipped around, searching the crowd as his hand patted his belt, predictably finding the sack of gold they’d earned today missing. Sighing, Scar rolled up his sleeve and pressed the pad of his thumb against the True Sight sigil Inked into his skin, the pair of eyes lighting up as he applied pressure and spoke the activation phrase.
The brunet winced at the wave of energy rolling through him, blinking a few times to adjust to the new wave of information hitting his brain as every detail became ten times sharper. He quickly noticed his target, a short man with a hair color between blonde and brown who was turned away from him and in the process of slipping a certain bag under his jacket.
