“Does the grey layer have a name?”
El, so curious about the world she inhabited, often asked questions like this. Definitions to store away and use for later, as if to prove to others that she deserved to be listened to because she had learned more. Will understands — there’s always been a level of disconnect between him and planning against Vecna. His friends are scared something will happen if they throw him into the middle, so he always has to be more sure, more brave, and more determined than anyone else if he wants to be involved.
It’s because of this understanding that Will eagerly gives her these names and phrases and definitions, and often gives her an answer before she even asks. But the name of this particular technique is heavy in the back of his throat.
“It’s called the dead layer.”

Summary
Mike doesn't care about a body in a quarry. His mark, a swingset, still sits on his left ankle as an important reminder. He checked. And then checked again just to make sure his brain wasn't playing a stupid trick on him. Imagine. If that body really is Will and Mike's mind is delusional that it's forcing him to see a mark that isn't there. Just the idea of that makes Mike dizzy. He thinks he'd rather die than for that to be true. But he still feels Will's terror and pain. It hurts to feel his soulmate so scared but it's grounding. Will is somewhere. That body is not his.

Will had never really talked about his time in the Upside Down before. Dustin had tried asking, once, but fortunately, Mike had shut it down before Will had even gotten the chance to refuse. It was a relief, at the time, to deny those awful memories the opportunity to come to light. There was a finality to it-like admitting what had happened to him would make it real.
"I also hid," Will said. "For a long time."
"In a memory?" Lucas asks cautiously.
Will starts to shake his head no, then tilts his head. "Sort of. Not really. In Castle Byers."

“You should go back to sleep”, Mike mutters, but Will’s eyes are already flying over his face, and he is probably taking in the embarrassing number of tears, and the sweaty hair sticking onto his forehead and—
“You’re bleeding”, Will whispers, and then, as if the realization strikes just now as he says it out loud, his voice increases in volume, but shakes harder all the more, “Mike, there’s— there’s blood pouring from your mouth.”
Mike would have been perfectly content with never exploring the depth of his repressed feelings, if it wasn't for the deadly flowers blooming in his lungs.

Mike sat on the floor with his back against the couch, close enough to Will's knee that he could feel the warmth of him, and found that his jaw had gone tight without his permission, some hot, ugly little knot pulling closed in his chest that he did not have a name for and did not particularly want one.
