Caitlyn’s out in the foyer talking to herself. There’s nothing distinct that Vi can make out, just the noise of a voice carried by quiet air.

“Christ,” says someone behind Stede.
Stede comes back. And then Stede spends perhaps too long in the walls of the Revenge trying to convince Ed to forgive him.

“Caitlyn.”
“Oh,” Jinx says knowingly, glancing Vi’s way out of the corner of her eye. “That’s the, uh, the cop girl, right? Maddie’s ex?”
A chorus of mutters and nods is the response.
“I’m being warned about her,” Vi tells her sister and Jinx blows her bangs out of her face.
“Good,” she says, almost snappishly. “Yeah, don’t date cop girl. You should date someone cool.”
“I’m not going to date anyone, not for a while. I need to get back on my feet first,” says Vi, drumming her fingers against the condensation of the glass. Thinking of Cupcake in her contacts, and that teasing smile.
Everything in Vi’s life right now is starting over. She’s spending the holidays on her sister’s pull-out futon, trying to make sense of the avalanche of changes, salvage what’s left of her family and figure out what she’s going to do next. The last thing she expects to do is include the beautiful woman she runs into on her first day in town, or this Caitlyn that everyone’s warning her to stay away from.

“You sure you’re good on the uh… drug blood? I can sniff out some more if you need,” Anton asks, turning to face the vampire seated next to him.
It’s impressive how someone can manage to look so utterly blitzed without the telltale bloodshot eyes. Somehow, Viago has managed it; lips parted slackly, gaze heavy-lidded and unfocused as he picks at blades of grass.
“I am good. So good.” Viago says lazily. Warmly. His fangs glint in the dim light, an insinuation of a grin in the dark.
Anton thinks he’d like to drag his tongue over them.

Summary
Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?
This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.

“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.
Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.
“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?
