Summary
Dennis’ car was a piece of junk. Plain and simple. He’d been meaning to get himself a vehicle for years now, since well before med school. After the arm and a leg he had to sell for his now deceased iPhone 8, he had been too short on money to even consider getting himself a car.
But he managed okay. Between public transportation and Trinity’s sensible Nissan Rogue, he got around just fine. But just fine wasn’t really cutting it with his frequent trips between the hospital, Trinity’s apartment, Amy’s farm, and Robby’s house.
He was feeling more than a little like a burden making the three people closest to him cart him around like the world’s most pathetic passenger prince. What kind of asshole had their driver’s license and still relied on the people around them to get from place to place?
Dennis needed to change that.

Robby's job wasn't usually interesting, frustrating maybe. He'd picked up two hitchhikers over the course of his over 2-decade-long career as a trucker. After one threw up in his truck, he'd sworn it off. But now, he saw a kid standing on the side of the road, looking like he was on the verge of passing out, and Robby felt too bad to drive by. The kid just stared at him. Robby rolled down his window.
"You need help getting in?"
The kid shook his head and stumbled to the passenger side of the truck, pulling himself up, placing a torn-up backpack on the floor. He closed the door and leaned against the window.

Short dark hair, a thick salt and pepper beard, long strong legs and to top it all off his chosen look for this year’s Pittsburgh Pride is a simple pair of jeans and a black FREE DAD HUGS t-shirt with a very sturdy looking leather vest on top.
Dennis feels drool pool into his mouth that has nothing to do with the day’s sunshine.
“God, Trinity.” He whispers, eyes raking over the visible coarse hair covering his forearms and the peak of tattoos on his biceps. Robby shifts on his feet and the curve of a belly illuminates his profile underneath the leather. Dennis thinks he may faint. “You never said he was so hot.”

They had come to be a highlight of his day, these missives from his boss. They made him feel special, chosen to see Robby’s revival play out in real time, although it was possible Robby was texting others too, maybe Abbot or Dana or Noelle. It had gotten to the point that Whitaker, never the biggest fan of smartphones—of any flashy tech, really—would scramble to retrieve his device from whatever odd shelf or surface he’d forgotten it on the second he heard it buzz. When it was Robby, his expression would involuntarily screw into an amused little grin, scanning the text a few times before deciding how to respond. If it was anyone else, Santos asking about bills, his mother badgering him to visit, he would drop his phone unceremoniously between the couch cushions and ignore the message for hours.
But Robby hadn’t sent one in days—six days, to be exact.
On his way home from Canada, Robby goes radio silent and his favorite resident spirals. When he comes home two weeks before he was scheduled to and finds Whitaker standing half-naked in his kitchen, things get even more complicated. (Or, everyone in Dennis Whitaker's life is falling apart around him, and he doesn't know how to not help.)

“Shit, Huckleberry,” she shakes her head, grinning. “You’re, like, religious guilt’s wet dream. A farmboy from buttfuck of nowhere Nebraska with a degree in theology and chock-full of daddy issues.”
Dennis opens his mouth, and then closes it. It’s not like what Trinity was saying wasn’t true. He tries to verbalize it, but the words feel too uncomfortably intimate.
(He’d thought about it many times before, but always while desperately praying repentance; it felt wrong to call it daddy issues when the word ‘father’ was so much more accurate.)
—A med student’s relationship with his attending physician becomes increasingly blurred.
(Or, Whitaker struggles to come to terms with his belief in salvation while Robby struggles to come to terms with his growing attraction for the MS4.)

“You’re a great cook, kid. Thanks for sharing. It got me through this fucking awful shift.” The older man nodded in thanks, smiled ever so slightly, and then turned around and walked away.
Or; Dennis brings Dr Robby lunch to work one day. The older man is very appreciative. An agreement is made. Who needs boundaries with their boss, anyway?
