For a moment— maybe all of them even— it strangely reminds the former surgeon of the act of falling. And not just falling off a cliff or falling in love, but falling in general.
There's always been a great divide to him when patients so-often expressed personal griefs with acts of falling, equating them to failing or failure when they could be looked at as anything but. Still, no matter which act itself, no matter which way one actually fell, it always evoked a sense that— whatever was happening, was probably the most important thing that could ever happen.
He's got his eyes lost in the same thoughts as Amsterdam brings morning into early afternoon. His hand is on the door of a tiny little building when Will asks something before he can even get the thing halfway open.
"What are you smiling about?" It's soft.

Hannibal's been here but he's never been to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
Will doesn't really like Pittsburgh so far and Hannibal doesn't like Pittsburgh Trauma Medial Center much at all either.
It's loud and noisy in the emergency service's waiting room, lights bright and way too florescent for either of their liking. They sit at the end of the row of plastic little chairs, no space on either side and all four knees forced to press inward. "We've been here for hours."

He says it quietly, between the pushing and the fussing, between the markers and finger paint, neither reaching or extending for them to get here. "I promise."
They're staring at one another, looking at each other in a way that only a kitchen allows them to look. It's not exactly like when Will was gutted and spread across, and it's not like when he pushes a fork of grapes to his daddy's mouth either.
It's something beyond the curtain and something that feels violent and beautiful at the same time. "Will."

Will looks a little miffed, as if he's confused why his daddy isn't holding him already, but he just shrugs his shoulders and lets his fingers squeeze a little harder around Olive's front paw.
When he says, "just feeling like this," he realizes he really wishes he had his fingers in his mouth. "Is that okay for today?"
Hannibal doesn't bother clicking the stove off. Things are fine to simmer. "Of course." His palms are open, pressed against the sides of his white linen apron. Perhaps later they will cook together, he thinks, him and his little boy. "Go do your potty and daddy will meet you in the bedroom in just a few, sweetheart."

He wraps his lips around the wound and sucks, a flood of metallic viscera coating his teeth and tongue. He groans as he bites down, and Will shudders, whimpering, a scream caught beneath the hand around his throat. Hannibal sits back, breath erratic, mouth red, blood dripping down his chin, eyelids fluttering.
More. More, more, he needs more. He should have had this. He should have known this taste, known the soft, shuddering noises like the beat of his own heart. And now? Now there was so little time. It will be a mere hour or two before Crawford is upon them. And the Questura, he suspects, very shortly after that. He’ll be lucky to finish his display and leave Florence in time.
