Nothing has been coming up Steve Harrington, lately. No relationship has panned out since Nancy left him, he didn't make it into any colleges, so now his father is making him work a minimum wage job at the mall, where he wears a ridiculous sailor costume and his coworker seems to hate him for no reason. It only tracks that now Steve is running late to said job at Scoops Ahoy. So who else would would the universe send to get stuck with him in the mall's revolving door but grade A annoyance Billy Hargrove? Wait, that was a rhetorical question—

“Ice skating... Along the road?”
Max’s eyebrows had climbed to her hairline when the outing was first proposed, much like Billy’s were now as she tried to convince him to give her a ride to Mike Wheeler’s. The satisfaction of having someone share the same initial incredulity she had felt at the outlandishness of the idea was ruined by that someone being Billy.
“The ditches are frozen solid out near the fields where the new mall is being built.” Max tried to make that sound like the end of it. No such luck.

AKA: Come January 1985, Max and Billy are roped into ice skating on roadside ditches, an activity Steve Harrington swears is worth putting up with each other for while freezing cold in the middle of nowhere. No one mentioned all the manual labor it would take for that to even be possible, let alone how tense things still are between Max and Billy since November. The Party is along for the ride. This was supposed to be a simple, mostly fluffy one-shot exploration of the stepsiblings' dynamic, with some hints at Harringrove from Max's POV. But it got WAY out of hand so now we're splitting this up.

You were standing in the locker room and I tried to talk to you, but you wouldn’t even look at me. Your face was all fucked up. I don’t think I did all of it.
“And you just looked at me and I just wanted to know what you’d seen. I wanted to know if you knew what we did, but you just looked and you were so close, and I just—”
Steve closed his eyes, screwed them shut like he could block out a memory Billy didn’t remember. He licked his lips and said, “You were standing so close to me and it felt like something I should do. And you kissed me back. Billy, you kissed me back. And then you just walked away.”

“Don’t want to push my luck.”
Harrington smiles a winning, beatific, smug prick of a smile. Leans in close and magnetizes Billy into his orbit, gives him a supersized dose of oxygen. Billy is Billy again and he tries to mirror the look. The pleased self-assuredness.
“Then let me push it for you,” he whispers and Billy is nodding, is gone, is fucked in the head.
