Summary
the next thing you learn is how cold it can get at night.
Jax is still in there, is the thing. Pomni saw him. Held him as he cried. The abstracted are still in there. And maybe there's something to be said for letting go of someone when it's too late to save them, before you get hurt yourself. But there's another ending. There's the ending where no matter how bad it gets you can make it, you can be saved, as long as you're here there's still hope. And maybe that's the ending we need right now.
Or: in this one, the princess can't save herself. Good thing we've got a whole village.

Summary
They’d been taken by surprise, is the problem. The fight with Auntie Ethel had left them drained, and they hadn’t been able to take more than a short rest on their way back to camp when the red caps ambushed them. They were small but tough little shits, and there were so many of them – their already weakened party was quickly overrun.
Karlach sees Astarion fall a moment later, rage rushing through her as she tears through the redcap that felled him. When she turns around, she realizes that was the last one. But none of her friends are standing either.

“That’s my name, yeah,” Karlach replies, shouldering her backpack. She notes Gale watching them, concern in his eyes, but brushes it off. If he’s going to find out about her past, it might as well be early into their burgeoning friendship. “If you know my name, you probably think you know my history. But we’re both college students, yeah? Tolerate my presence and I’ll tolerate yours and we don’t have to do anything else about it, okay?”

Summary
It had been an uneventful day on the road from Alfield to Zadash - no bandits, no wild animal attacks, no screaming children, no mysterious strangers - it was almost peaceful (you mean boring, Nott would say), a day spent amidst companions who, despite everything, were very swiftly becoming something like friends. Dusk sets in overhead, staining the blue sky first orange, then red, then finally a soft lavender with a promise to deepen.
Mollymauk absently sets about getting a fire started while the others unfurl blankets and open bags and quibble over who gets first watch. He smiles gently to himself, at ease with the banter filling the night. The carnival was always bustling, even on the road, even when all the guests left for the night. Toya would sing to herself quietly for comfort, Orna and Gustav’s constant bickering, Yasha’s strong presence by his side.
He sends out a quick prayer that her mission be not only successful but swift. He misses her with a fierceness.

Journal| Solitary Confinement | “Make it stop.”When he comes to, there are arms around him and a gentle humming from above his head. He fights the urge to thrash against the confinement – but the arms don’t feel confining. There’s no weight to them, just a warmth and a softness against his chest and around his back. He blinks open his eyes, taking in the flickering light of the fire he’s faced towards, and the long brown hair next to his cheek. He catches the scent of leaves and earth and sweat and life, and has to jerk back despite how comfortable he realizes he is.
Or, Astarion gets hit by a Fear spell. Halsin comes to the rescue.

His scowl falls lopsided, buckling under the strain of her question. He lets out a frustrated growl, runs a hand down his face.
“...Nothing, Pomni. Forget it.”
“You can talk to me,” Pomni reminds him.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Okay…” Pomni gives a hesitant nod, not wanting to feed any further into his instincts to dig his heels in and deny the obvious. “Then talk to me about nothing.”
In another life, Jax's final attempt to reach out to Pomni goes a little differently.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 9!!
' She can’t help her mind wandering though, back to a topic that’s been a frequent visitor in her mind for weeks now, relentlessly pounding against her skull.
Caine had come up to them two months prior, practically glitching with excitement, sharing that they may be able to potentially heal abstraction. He wasn’t positive, but he’d been working closely in the digital files of the Circus lately, giving himself something to do in between their regular activities. He found that the files of their lost friends still existed, but were corrupted, damaged, though fixable, if he was looking at it correctly at least. He couldn’t promise anything, but he had hope that they could actually do something.
This had caused excitement to rise within the group, eyes sparkling and discussion rampant. Voices had overlapped each other, and Pomni couldn’t help the heaviness on her chest of their most recent cast member lost lightening a bit at the positivity of the group, eyes drifting to the large circus tent he resided in most days, when he wasn’t in the aquarium with the others. '
