What if an enclaver but not an entitled bag of sausages.
In all seriousness, the idea of an enclaver who considers his retinue as genuine friends rather than useful tools stuck in my head during The Last Graduate. Chloe’s non-AadhELiu relationships aren’t described at all, nor is Alfie’s non-LiesEl cohort. That’s a wasted opportunity, if you ask me. Sure, the abusive nature of the enclave system is central to the Scholomance, but what happens if an enclaver recognizes that system’s abusive nature? What does it do to him/her? How does he reconcile it with his own basic need to survive? A four-fifths survival rate is a sight better than the one-fifth of non-enclavers, but a one in five chance of excruciatingly painful death (or worse) is still no joke.
Here’s an attempt at someone who’s actually trying to square that ugly circle. It turns out, it doesn’t square easily.

But when he does, if he does, well—he considers it part and parcel of Garak, that's all. Disconcerting at first, a little invasive. Awfully close to a line but not quite crossing it, and leaving Julian with absolutely no idea what he's meant to do in response. Garak in microcosm, summarized in a single unexpected gesture.
(Or: Julian has always thought Garak just had a weird little habit. Until another Cardassian does the same thing to him, and seems to imbue the gesture with a meaning Julian really had not anticipated.)

Zevran took a risk when he offered himself up to the Grey Wardens, but it was a risk worth taking. Over the span of just one short week, he finds himself with a freedom he’s never had before, a new purpose, new friends. He might even be starting to hold out a little hope that this world can be saved. Despite the mud and blood that mars their trek through the Ferelden countryside towards the Circle Tower, the week after his failure as a Crow is quite possibly the best week of Zevran’s entire life. The only trouble is that it ends in death, again and again. If only it were his. If only his would stick.
