He could already imagine Shane’s face when he saw the official-looking divorce papers from Ilya Rozanov. Shane would open the envelope, read the first few lines, spiral for solid thirty seconds, and then notice the tiny line Hayden had hidden near the top of the page.

Shane was tired.
It had only been two months since he joined the Centaurs, he shows up to practice and it's like a switch turns on where he just pretends.
Pretends he likes Boodram's ideas for Shane-inclusive barbecue food, which just makes him feel different and needy because he's the only one in their team who's this rigid. Pretends that he likes Hayes’ teasing about his awkward habits in front of everyone else, which pisses him off, coming from the guy who brings up Green Lantern comics every other practice. Pretends he likes Harris asking him excited questions about his relationship with Ilya, if the topic doesn't still make him want to rip off his skin. Pretends his life and career weren't uprooted exactly how he feared— leaving him in a shitty team.
Or: Shane wasn't prepared for every aspect of his life to be uprooted the moment his relationship with Ilya went public. He is happy, he thinks, but adjusting to team dynamics, moving away from Montreal, living with Ilya and Anya is prove to be perfect storm for burnout.

McGill Redbirds’ alternate captains Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov barely speak a word to each other off the ice. Oh my god, I didn't know there were any copies of this left on the internet. For those who don't know, this is like. This is a foundational text of hockey RPF. This is from before hockey RPF was really a thing even. It's from the mid-aughts and wasn't posted to a fanfiction website. Instead, OP dropped this insane RPF manifesto onto a normal ass hockey fan forum (which no longer exists) then deleted their account like two days later. Just handed this to a bunch of jocks and hockey bros and dipped. Legendary shit. Like, I don't think this kid even knew what fanfiction was, the fucking hand of god just compelled him to write about being an MLH player's sex slave and show it to the world. I pray every day that this insane child actually made it to the MLH and got to meet Scott Hunter.
So maybe Shane had a little crush on Scott Hunter in his younger years. So maybe he anonymously posted online about it once. So maybe it had become an internet legend and a running joke in the MLH.

Ilya doesn't realise he's fallen in love until he's faced with losing Shane to the six months of his unanswered texts, the incidental cruelty of Ilya’s desperate, last-ditch attempt to protect and distance himself unknowingly compounded for Shane by the secret grief at his loss of a baby nobody but he even knows existed.
By the time Ilya realises that there's something very wrong with Shane, he's terrified that it's too late - not just to save any possibility of a relationship between them, but to save Shane's life.
