Light snapped his gaze back to him, eyes wide with incredulity, before letting out a nervous laugh.

Summary
This time though, when he turns around, L is a little surprised by what he sees. Light’s eyes are no longer eager and fierce, fighting for a cause he cares strongly for. Instead, they are wide, washed-out ambers filled with horror. It is not over the loss of a lead, the way L felt when Higuchi fell, but over Higuchi himself.
Light lets the Death Note plop onto the keys of the laptop, sinks back into his seat, and shakes.
Light gets his hands back on the Death Note post Yotsuba, just as he had planned. The memories' effect on him, however, was unplanned. Of course, L notices.

Somewhere along the way — the chains or the cell or the room with the birdsong — L had forced something in Light to open like a flower, or like a wound.
Alone with L, Light was a different person. He was living another life, tucked discreetly underneath the first one. It felt much like being Kira had felt.
Sometimes, it felt just as violent: this feeling that L inspired in him, that turned his insides and made a mess of him.
Even when it simply felt soft between his ribs, it hurt.

“You and Matsuda can make out in the break room all you want, if that’s what you apparently like. I’m learning a lot about you today.”
“You’re imagining it in quite vivid detail. Would you like to watch?”
The corner of Light’s mouth twitched, and he calmed himself by imagining attacking Matsuda like a wild animal.
“L,” Light said, smiling like he worked in customer service. “Are you going to eat the goddamn carrot or not?”
