“Please, it's just Carl- and whether he does or not, it doesn't really matter. He's missing out on vital learning experiences here, Peter, surely you can see that.”
The topic of conversation is changed. Carter becomes an afterthought to Vucelich, and that ought to be the case for Peter too, but it isn't. An hour passes, then two, and setup begins for the cardiac surgery panel. Carter doesn't show.
OR
Carter and Benton are invited to attend a conference in California as part of Vucelich's research project.
Naturally, though, Carter gets sick after only a day, and it's up to Peter to decide where his priorities lie: with his student, or with the study.

Learning that Carter was in dire need of a new kidney and that he hadn't even told anyone prompts Benton to reflect on missed opportunities and feelings he has been running away from for a long time.

Well, first there was probably coffee in the cafeteria, and then dinner in a nice but well-lit restaurant. Nothing too obvious. Then maybe a sporting event, and tonight's the jazz club. We all know what happens after the jazz club.
