Summary
Life feels so chaotic for Shane sometimes, with all the loud noises and the unwritten rules he’s expected to follow, even though no one ever taught them to him. It’s why the bookstore feels more like home to him than anywhere else in Boston. It doesn’t ask Shane to be anything other than himself. Doesn’t ask for any more than he can give.
He can just exist here.
Shane likes slow, likes taking his time. And Ilya - without saying or doing anything in particular - makes Shane feel like that’s okay. Like he isn’t doing anything wrong by standing still sometimes.

Shane doesn’t know how to grocery shop for two. He doesn’t know how to do any of this, really. He’s keenly aware that this was the longest stretch of time he’d be spending alone with Ilya, with any one person ever, outside of his parents.
In a way, it feels like playing house, unpacking the groceries and setting out a set of towels and washcloths for him. It is playing house. This is what it might feel like, to be able to have him all the time. The thought feels impossible to contemplate, terrifying to dwell on for longer than a minute or two at a time.

“I was trying to be cool about it.” Shane's confession is a quiet whine, muffled into his palms. “Go with the flow, y’know?”
It’s almost unbearable, how much Ilya adores this perfect, neurotic man. “Hollander,” he says patiently. “You have never once gone with flow. Not ever in your life.”
There is only one grey cloud in the perfect blue sky of Ilya’s summer.
His two weeks at the cottage are almost over, and Shane still hasn’t asked him to stay.

Summary
Shane wants to figure out if he's gay before he gets drafted—and no, the way he felt when Ilya Rozanov smirked at him with a cigarette between his lips in Saskatchewan has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, the random guy he hooks up with to try and make sure one way or another takes a picture, and Shane gets outed before the draft. In the ensuing scandal, he goes seventh overall, to Ottawa.
It turns out, having the worst thing you can think of happen to you when you're seventeen years old can end up being pretty liberating. And land you an unexpected best friend.

“It feels so strange. I’ve known you for eight years. I love you. No one alive knows me more than you do. But also. There’s so many things I’ve missed–things that I should know.”
Shane worries his lip for a moment, thinking. “What if…what if we just. Ask. Everything you can think of. Everything you want to know. We spend the last day we have just. Learning everything we possibly can. No question’s off limits. Will that feel better?”
Ilya nods, eyes closing as Shane kisses his forehead. “Yes, I think so.”
Or: Ilya realizes that for all of the years he and Shane have spent together, there's still plenty left to learn. As their last day at the Cottage before returning back to their respective cities, they get one full day of questions and answers to catch up on everything they’ve missed.
