“In another life, we might have met here,” Viktor says one night as they lay in their bed. They needed a new mattress, or at least a new material to fill it with. It was lumpy in all the wrong places. “We would have met as kids, fallen in love as teens, and lived our whole lives as tradesmen. We would be happy like that.”
Jayce lies on his side, facing Viktor. “Maybe,” he agrees. “But I wouldn't have it any other way.”
I would, Viktor thinks. I would like to be less broken with you. I would like to give you fewer pieces to help me put back together. I would like it if you had never known pain on my account.

Viktor’s eyes gleam softly amber. He blinks, turns slightly from Jayce a moment. Jayce thinks briefly he sees tears in his eyes, a glazing over, a shimmering blister forming over sclera, iris and pupil. A strange unease settles over Jayce’s shoulders, indecipherable. He moves his foot out, presses the shined toe of his black brogue against the inside of Viktor’s left.
Viktor says, “I don’t want us to lose our way, Jayce.” He looks back, eyes clear, dry.

A HexCorp-branded stapler hits Jayce squarely in the face.
Following the tragic and sudden death of his partner, unable to cope with his grief, Jayce Talis resorts to the risky and controversial procedure of severance: splitting the memories of his work life and personal life to forget about losing Viktor for eight hours a day. It's working. It’s helping him. It must be.
Until, one day, a random stranger breaks into his garage claiming to know him; claiming there is a way to reverse the severance procedure and warning him that not everything about either HexCorp or Viktor’s death is as it seems.

"Supposedly, sperm can't pass through the fabric barrier. And since you won't be inside me, it wouldn't really count as sex."
Jayce had spent the last hour constructing the argument for why this didn't count truly as a sin. Not really. They would keep their underwear on, well, he would do it, on Viktor’s plan he would be without so “the wetness would make it more lubricated and easy to move” or at least that’s what Jayce heard when his heartbeat was on his ear. He admired Viktor’s clinical tone, as if this was just another experiment for her science project.
No penetration.
No mouths anywhere they shouldn't be.
Hands only for holding on.
