Avoiding the thought of Quint had not only been a way to escape the details of his end; guilt for Hooper's role in his passing had only grown more intense as the days stretched on. Lying on the mattress staring up at the inn’s ceiling, he’d spend hours replaying the time he spent in the anti-shark cage and the moments that had led up to it. The smell of the smoke caused by the burnt bearings and the droplets of strychnine nitrate that slipped through the rim and beaded onto the cork. The sound of the metal bars clanging against the ship as the cage was hoisted up and the splash it made as it was dropped halfway into the waters below. The feeling of the cage rattling back and forth as the shark battered its face into it and just how quickly the spear had slipped from his hands and descended into the black depths. Not before nor ever since did Hooper believe he’d ever feel as afraid as he’d been in that moment.
He doubted he’d ever sleep another night without seeing those teeth.
Moving on from Amity doesn't come easy for Hooper. Moving on from Quint, even less.

From what he can see, her breath is coming in small pants, her head thrown back against the pillow, her mouth making small movements Robby supposes are cries for help. “Dammit, Jack, where the fuck are you?” he says aloud desperately, about to turn around and run down the hallway and pound on the door himself, when he catches a glimpse of exactly where Jack is and realizes he’s gotten it all wrong.

"Uh -- I think we'll be..." Hooper shrugs under her gaze. "...dissecting a carcass."
She smiles, wearied and a little far-away. "You don't have to take the cake along."
Outside, the tide comes in dark under the stars, eating the shore slow and spitting it up. Hooper tightly squeezes his own crossed arms. He has at least two pairs of goggles in his trunk of gear. His wetsuit is coiled at the bottom. He can't decide if it's more dangerous to ask a woman he just met if she has any tampons in the house or to jump into the Atlantic ocean with nothing.
