Summary
When Hardy showed up at Paul’s on Thursday night, he hadn’t anticipated staying all weekend. He hadn’t thought it through, too upset and consumed by the pain he was feeling in the moment to consider that Friday morning he’d phone Miller, starting out saying he’d be late to work, only to hang up on a note of “see you tomorrow.” Grumbling that she’d browbeaten him into a day off, already going over his head to let the CS know he needed the break, he stuffed his mobile back into the pocket of Paul’s borrowed pyjama bottoms and sat down at the table with Paul.

Summary
Alec used to be Catholic. He used to believe like his parents did: mass every Sunday, prayers and communion wafers over doctors and medication, and the monthly youth group meetings. He dreaded those meetings, never quite sure why. He dreaded the stares, the whispers; they all knew he was different. They knew he was tainted. They saw his sins even before he did.
Or: Alec inadvertently opens up about his religious trauma to Paul right before Daisy is meant to move in with him.
There are flashbacks, but no present-day Alec sexual assault.

Summary
Daisy had set him up with some dating app or other, and now Alec Hardy has to go on an actual date.
“Oh, okay,” Miller said flatly, with mock offense. “Well, have a nice night, doing whatever it is you're not doing.” Another grin flashed across her face as she glanced across to two other CID officers. They had been eavesdropping and were also grinning. Anything more he said at this point would be taken as evidence of guilt, so he decided to cut his losses, abruptly looking away and heading for the door before he did anything else to give himself away. He was already a bag of nerves and wanted nothing more than to just sit in his car and breathe for a minute.

Summary
He preferred drowning to this, honestly. At least drowning was muffled, distanced from the life above, unlike the feeling of rawness, of sterility that came with fluorescent lights and clacking heels and keyboard clicking, the scent of perfume with every person that passed by, the talking and talking and talking and—
“Are you okay?”
He wanted to ram his head into a wall.
“‘M fine,”

Summary
His carefully guarded secret, that he had put in so much effort to keep hidden had been exposed by some arsehole journalist who didn’t have anything better to do with their time but go and dig around in his own personal life.
Why could they do that? What gave them the right to do this? What the hell had he done to deserve that? Alec knew the answer to that. The flashes of memories that were shared only between him Paul and God seemed reason enough. But why now? Why like this?---

Summary
“God loves you, Alec.” Paul pressed down on his head with his hand, as though he was trying to make the blessing stronger.
He held his hand steady as more blood dripped off his fingers into the cup that stood under it. “How-How do you know He loves me?” he whispered, voice cracked and full of tears.
Paul didn’t pause whispering praise. It almost hurt to hear the words ring in his ears, the words that told him something so different from what he believed himself to be. From what the church had told him he was. Alec let out a wrangled sob when the vicar increased the pressure he was applying to his arm again, so more blood still would come out.
“God loves everyone. God forgives you for your sins. You’re giving your blood for His forgiveness.” He told Alec, before continuing the praise. He didn’t hear the exact words, his mind was blocking them out, it hurt too much.

Summary
“My eh. My father died.” The words had tumbled out of his mouth before he’d thought about them twice. The vicar needn’t know that. He didn’t want to, Alec assumed.
Instead of rejecting him, however, Paul’s eyes softened. “I’m sorry for your loss.”
He shrugged. “Haven’t talked to him in thirty years.” It sat heavy in his chest, somehow. He’d never had any regrets about it before. His father had been an asshole even when his mum had been alive. It had only got worse since her death.
Yet now that he no longer could, he still wished he could have seen the man one last time. To show him what he had become. To tell him that he’d been wrong.
“Doesn’t make it any easier.”
“No.” Alec conceded. “Suppose it doesn’t.”---

Summary
“How do you become a vicar?” Alec found himself asking one night, after Lukas had helped him with the homework and he in turn had helped decorate the church for the children’s easter mass.
Lukas tilted his head. “Why?”
He felt himself blush a little. He’d been thinking about it for months now. It seemed only logical. Alec spent most of his free time in the church now, either helping Lukas or being helped with homework, or praying. Whenever he stepped in the church, he relaxed. In the church he felt he belonged to something, someone. “Thought…maybe I could…”
“You want to become a vicar?”
Alec shrugged, not making eye contact. “Is that stupid?”

Two people happened to be awake on the same night, one of them couldn't sleep while the other just wanted to see the stars.
